free spyware, or something like that

Post by Joey »

i have this program Ad-aware 6.0 on my computer. I guess it searches for spying things or something. first can someone explain to me what it does. my dad installed it on my computer and i dont know what it does.

second, does anyone know of a free program, that will monitor who is trying to connect to my computer, and block it, so no one can hack or spy on my computer? i think this is a firewall, but when i used to have one, i couldn't for example, host a game server, and allow people to connect, because it would block them. so i just wanted a program to stop people from spying on my computer and stuff like that while im online. any program like this for free?

"when I built a 10-fool wall around my grass field nobody would come over. So I tore it down again, and somebody stole my TV from the field"

think making a door. (IE: opening one port, opening all ports to a limited set of IP's, things like that)

Firewall

Try Sygate Personal Firewall (really old name, but that one did work really good) or something like blackice defender. They're firewalls too.

If you can spare a box for firewalling use Linux 2.4 something or better with netfilter & use good ruling for the passage & blocks. Works really really good :)

Because the entire point of Ad-Aware is NOT that you don't get any more ads. It is a program that removes anything that's spying on you. That includes programs reading your keyboard, programs following your internet activity and stuff like that. If you remove that program for one that blocks GIF images for you, that's plain stupid.

To do that, block images from those servers, block any images in those dimensions, block all images altogether, stop using MSIE (also known as use tabbed browsing & popupkiller & free better rendering engine & better usage & lots more) or start ignoring them. One big @$$ recommendation: deinstall Macromedia Flash. It might have been a nice idea, but it wrecks lots of webpages, you lose only one or two webpages that are flash-only (which is not much) and you get a lot more silence on your screen. Solves nearly all ad problems for me.

For the ad stuff, set cookies to ask-mode and both stop using windows and MS products. All n00bs use them, all evil companies & evil people target them. If you're smart enough not to use them you won't be targeted as much.

In general, avoid programs that have a monopoly. It's bad for your health. This includes flash and msoffice too :).

Ad-aware and Spybot: Search and Destroy, SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard (and a pop-up killer) are all I use, and I haven't seen an ad for a while.
I wouldn't suggest to use AdsGone, as it is known to install spyware in your system itself (while probably not detecting it). Check Zero Popup or other similar programs.
