All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

College: Anonymous or personal?

Post by stonedzealot »

So I've finally made a college decision. I just wanted to do a small survey of anyone (even if you've never been in a college). Which is better, anonymity or one to one action in your dept.?

To give a concrete example:

UIUC (www.uiuc.edu) has a fantastic Computer Science program. It's classes cover broad topics and you'll come out of the program a well-rounded geek. But, since the staff there is dealing with 25k kids (in the whole school, I don't know the actual CS stats), you're on your on your own if you want to ask questions.

UMR (www.umr.edu) has another really good Computer Science program despite its reputation. Just look at the attrition rate if you're questioning (people say "Holy ****, this is actually challenging" and drop). It's not as broad in its programs but its small enough that you can drop by the CS office and use it as a resource (e.g. talk to professors).

So which would you choose? The one with broader programs but less chance of interaction or the one with less broad programs and interaction? I chose UMR (hahaha, partly because U of I canned my @$$, but whatever).

I would choose broader programs because if I can't figure something out on my own, I have the net I can search, so I don't need to worry about not having the ability to easily ask the teachers questions and such.

And what does this have to do with the question?

I'm partial against UMR because I went there for my first term freshman year - OMG that was a rough 4 1/2 months.. not to mention that it's in the middle of Missouri and there's absolutely nothing of interest within 100 miles..

UIUC is a huge school (and a good party school to boot). From what I hear, you will work your arse off, but the school is very highly regarded among employers.

Frankly, after working for the last 6 months as a Web Editor for a trade magazine, I'd be happy to get out of computers entirely for work and open up a quaint little coffee shop in Chicago. I figure, I'm busting my butt - why not do it with something that I actually choose to be in?

Oh well, enough about me. Carry on....
