Linux Newbie

Post by guest »

Hi,

I just got my redhat linux 9 distro installed and need to find a good place to learn all the little things that I am so used to doing in windows. I still have win2k installed but I want to slowly transition over to completely using linux, win2k will only be used by my kids and wife, so I need to get myself up to speed on how to do all the little things that we take for granted.

Also I need to get a handle on the security issues that I must now consider, I guess this is not as important as windows has almost no security anyway.

any help will be appreciated.
thanks.

www.linux.org has a lot of little how-tos, as well as an Intro to Linux on-line coursebook for free. Pretty useful.

Also, if you're ever stuck for an application, that you figure exists, but aren't sure, use "apropos". Say you want to find some commands or functions for printers. Just go to the CLI terminal and type "apropos printers", and you'll get a list of commands and functions that have the word "printers" in the name or description. Then you can use "man" to print manuals to screen for each command and function you wish to examine.

And firewalls are for wimps ;)
