Re:Just another XP thing..
I love XP it's the best OS I have ever used.
I am sure someone can help you out. Although I don't know much about installing a modem, because I use a LAN connected to a cable modem for my internet connection.

Re:Just another XP thing..
Now that was just un called for. I don't think you guys should be trashing OS's just because it isn't your favorite. I think linux is great for running a server on. A major portion of server's is linux because of how well it works. Even agigames.com is a linux server.
Re:Just another XP thing..
Oliver, have you got problems with your drivers? I had problems with them too when I used modem.
Re:Just another XP thing..
I've had trouble installing new hardware on my lady friend's PC (it uses XP). What I ended up doing was browsing through the control panels until I found an innocuous-looking clicky-thing not unlike some kind of half-assed hyperlink that auto-detected the "missing" hardware, assessed the problem, and then gave me the option of fixing it or not fixing it. Then it fixed it. The irony of the situation was that the hardware driver cd (which had XP support) failed to properly "install", the scanner installation "button" (I was installing a scanner) didn't work, so I ended having to climb up the command tree to just the general hardware installation button widget thing.
By the way, does anyone else experience INCREDIBLE slowness running XP. Seriously, we're running almost 2 Ghz over here and it's running like my old Tandy 1000.

I only had this happen to me once, when I pressed ctrl alt delete, it said that cpu usage was at 100%, apparently the program called dadtray.exe was frozen... maybe this could be your problem?failrate wrote: I've had trouble installing new hardware on my lady friend's PC (it uses XP). Re:Just another XP thing..
I happy now! It works now. It's really strange (everything is different).
Re:Just another XP thing..
Linux is used for servers because it is rock solid (nigh on impossible to crash), and extremely fast. Linux is not free, it is just Open Source, and the main reason that M$'s product is still used more is because of clever marketing, and it will run with anything.Perica Senjak wrote:Yes that's true, many servers are Unix based. But it doesn't necessarily mean that they are the best option, probably the main reason Linux is used on Servers is because it's Free. Yes Linux does have some nifty Server Features, but i must say Windows 2000 Server isn't too bad either (There are other Server versions of Windows aswell); Yes, maybe Linux is good for Servers - But it Definately isn't the best choice for Home-Users, Windows is more User-Friendly.Chris Cromer wrote:I think linux is great for running a server on. Re:Just another XP thing..
Windows doesn't crash very often unless you've got a configuration problem, but I think a lot of people blame those "illegal operation" boxes on Windows, when in fact they are roughly the equivalent of a segmentation fault on Unix -- i.e., those messages are usually the fault of the program and rarely the fault of the OS.
Re:Just another XP thing..
Well XP is still new for me so i want to ask: How can I edit my homepage in XP? :-[
Re:Just another XP thing..
A user should not be able to crash an Operating System, a user can only run programs. It's the bad programming we must blame (mainly in the user applications).Perica Senjak wrote: The Reason it may Crash so often is because users don't have the knowledge/ability to use it properly, If your OS Crashes - The only person to blame is yourself! I've followed the other Windows v.s Linux threads, just want to get his off my chest...
I've used most version of windows, windows XP is nice to work with, I actually enjoy working on it and have it installed on my main machine. At work I always feel more confident of getting an XP machine up and running on the network than a non-XP machine. (I'm more concerned about what power Microsoft have over your computer when connected to the web though.)
I also have a version of SuSe Linux 8.0 on my old machine, it feels a little bit sluggish (but it is only a 233Mhz), but setting up CVS servers, IRC servers, etc is fairly straight forward, just a case of editing a few config files. I can't say I find Linux easy to use, because I'm so used to Windows, but I won't trash Linux for that, it's my fault alone for not giving it the time to learn properly.
Each OS has it's strengths for different reasons. I don't know if Linux is quite ready for the average desktop user yet, I feel the average 'joe public' struggles with using Windows, Linux is much more technical. But Linux has the openSource community behind it, a world-wide network of programmers, continuously working on improving it. It is just a matter of time before we see Linux as a 'real' contender for the desktop pc.
I'm not even going to go down the 'Microsoft business style' path, as the company is not the product. How many people are running illegal versions of Windows? I bet some of you reading this are, or have in the past. Some of you will have uninstalled your illegal products and installed totally free legal Linux alternatives.... more power to you
...end rant.
