Man loses will to live during gentoo install
Look like what appears to be a classic problem with Linux and its overall package management and build quality, had enough with red hat too. Do they even qualify contributors credentials?

Gentoo is a poor choice for beginners. If you want something simple go with Ubuntu or Fedora.
But, if you are prepared to put in the work, it allows a system far more tailored to individual needs than those two. I've used Gentoo as my primary Linux install for the past 15 years. But I think xfce is the bees knees.

Recently transitioned to rhel6 to rhel7 version. Talking about things breaking, things used to be there not there anymore, stuff that used to work failing miserably, it is like something that has been raped over and over and strangulated, it is no longer recognizable anymore. etc.,

That's why I like Gentoo - because of the control it gives me. But I appreciate that some want a turnkey system.
I've never been a big fan of Red Hat (or Ubuntu). Debian is a good choice if you want a stable, pre-built system. It lacks the flashiness of Ubuntu, but it works.

that left me wondering, what is non-turn-key? something that anyone can change "at will"? That seems to be a disaster recipe by itself.

Re: Man loses will to live during gentoo install
It certainly can be a disaster if you don't really know what you are doing. Which is why I wouldn't recommend Gentoo to beginners.
Re: Man loses will to live during gentoo install
Arguably, the will to live must have been lost some time before deciding to install gentoo.
Re: Man loses will to live during gentoo install
I found the Gentoo installation handbook really well written and easy to follow. So long as you don't have a weird esoteric hardware configuration, it should be fine.iansjack wrote:It certainly can be a disaster if you don't really know what you are doing. I'd agree that anyone who can follow instructions should be able to install Gentoo nowadays without too much difficulty. It was a bit more involved when the distribution was new. Maintaining it can, at times, be a bit problematical but nothing that a little common sense and some Googling can't sort out. But it is, undeniably, a distribution that require a little more competence than Ubuntu.

How many have attempted to slit their wrists while Windows installs 20 updates after you requested a system shutdown? I'm sure there are more casualties from this cause than from Gentoo installation. [Wink-wink nod-nod say no more]
Microsoft is over if you want it.

Re: Man loses will to live during gentoo install
Why should I care? If I'm shutting the system down, I'm not planning on using it in the immediate future.
If I select "Update and restart" instead of just "Restart" and then it proceeds to do a bunch of updates, that's my own fault for having the reading comprehension skills of a cantaloupe.

That is (luckily) the case for modern windows installs. I still remember the laptops in the vista era, where windows default action on any shutdown was to install updates, and you specifically had to look for the button that stopped it from doing that beforehand. That was just godawfull design.

Hi,

Yes, but you may want to go outside and not have the computer running, even if this means installing updates. I guess it's the case with most users.Kazinsal wrote:Why should I care? If I'm shutting the system down, I'm not planning on using it in the immediate future.

The computer will switch itself off when it has installed the updates, so what's the problem?

Not wanting to put a laptop that is still running in your backpack because it will overheat?
