Listening to music while programming

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

Listening to music while programming

Post by Thunderbirds747 »

Tim here,
I was wondering, whether you do or don't listen to music while programming.
In my case, I listen to Enigma (yes, that's a musical project founded in 1990) and concentration music.
Sincerely,
Tim Ryazanoff.

For a while there I used the complete set of Harry Potter books on CD - Jim Dale rocks.

But I get alot of work done with the Chemical Brothers, BasementJax, and Marisa Monte

Sometimes. The choice of music is as varied as my musical tastes are.
When you start writing an OS you do the minimum possible to get the x86 processor in a usable state, then you try to get as far away from it as possible.

Syntax checkup:
Wrong: OS's, IRQ's, zero'ing
Right: OSes, IRQs, zeroing

Whatever doesn't take my attention, and overrides talk among my coworkers (which tends to DO take my attention).

My hard drive currently holds a collection of C64 remixes, current chart music, and MP3 rips of a couple of my favourite movies (as "audio books" if you like). I select according to mood. The C64 remixes are traditionally what I pick for hardcode coding. ;-)

When I'm in programming mode, I like to switch to computer music to get me in the mood. So lots of electronic stuff. Classic IDM stuff a-la Aphex Twin/Autechre/Squarepusher/BoC, maybe a little FlyLo -- I stick with instrumental stuff because lyrics distract me.

Also, not a huge metal head, but metal makes for some really good work music. Mastodon and Mars Volta are good standbys, as well as heavy math stuff like And So I Watch You From Afar. Gonna throw QotSA in this heading too for some gut reason, even though that doesn't make any real sense.

Yes, why not?

Just one condition I have always applied when I've been highly effective: Music, TV, and the rest of entertainment is just a background intended to refresh and ambient what I'm studying and implementing. It depends on what I'm doing. I never pay direct attention to any of those distractions. I just fully concentrate on what I'm doing and let the good background elements to refresh me on their own with their true value instead of attending them.

I would recommend "Brain Food" or dagens casino from Sweden playlist from alla Spotify ;) It's improving my focus greatly.

I have to say, I am a Jimmy Buffett fan. I have every album in a playlist on shuffle. It is one of the few ways I can concentrate when writing code.

And as a shameless plug to a very interesting service I've discovered, free of charge, free of registration, and free of ads (but donations being welcome):

MyNoise -- as website, or smartphone app (which does not require an online connection once downloaded).

Spent the morning listening to Gregorian chanting, then switched to a bubbling brook with birdsong. DO try the "animate" function to make the soundscape change subtly over time.

My music collection weight in at about 600gig and includes just about every genre beside indian music and french canadian country music... I have it on random play most of the time. If music isn't playing then I have some documentary playing in a window on my second monitor or some youtube channel.

I usually listen to some ambient, electronical music. Recently I've been listening OST from the Stranger Things serie.

I can't concentrate in a silent environment. There's always some form of background noise be that music or tv.

I often listen to light EDM, something like Kygo (sometimes Avicii).

I don't like too much high-pitched vocals, or I can't focus.
