We are looking for programmers with experience in C++ or linux development to undergo development of a new operating system.
This will not be a 'toy' operating system. It will be a full-fledged OS that should have the ability to compete with all the leading market operating systems.
This OS will be based on the linux platform due to its stability. In particular, we want to provide all the functionality of major OSs, along with a killer look and feel as well as built-in security systems.
We also welcome any ideas you may have regarding new or improved features that may be included in an operating system.
For some of you, this project should be a major test of your programming skills. The operating system will not be deployed if it does not pass exhaustive testing procedures or if it does not meet the approval of the founder.
More information will be available at a later time. If any of you are up to a challange, submit your resume to [email protected]. This is just a screening process-no interview is necessary. Circumstances have pushed this project forward, so we plan to begin within a year.

I think some people got the wrong idea about the resumes.
This is an open project-it is alright if you have current jobs or are in college. At the least it will gain you experience, but there will be major profit sharing involved. We are looking to involve about 500 people-the resumes are if we have more than that many interested. There isn't really a set deadline for this, but the sooner it is completed-the better. If the OS does well, then we will want to give a lot of you the option for full-time staff positions.
We already have current members working on a DBMS, but if they drop out or we are running behind, we will open it up to a project system as well. Most of us are Java programmers.
We were not planning on starting this for a couple of years, but something happened to cause us to push it forward. There are certain things we want to do with it, but it is up to all of you to incorporate what you want. You should really think of this as your own project; so if there are things you have been wanting to do-here is a good chance to make it happen. We have every confidence that you can all do what we are expecting here. Operating systems programmers are hard-core programmers, and you have source code for linux to start with.

Uhm... I'd say it's a major test of anyone's programming skills if you intend to create a viable alternative to current OS's... good luck with that.
If you're planning on doing a "professional" job, I'd recommend considering some professional processes. "The sooner the better" is *not* going to cut it.

And why should we hire you, who doubts his own abilities and the abilities of everyone else?
The difference here is-I have faith in you. I am offering you the opportunity to join together and do something great.
If you like the current operating systems so much... then by all means, feel free to use them.
If you think we can do better, then we should give it a shot. You have absolutely nothing to lose except some of your time.

there has yet to be a person born into this world, for whom an OSdev project is not a major chalange!!
its not about doubting ones skills, its about the fact that you are totally clueless as to anything OSdev related!
you obvoiusly have never done it yourself, and your goals are FAR out of reach of anyone (even the best in the world)
further, if your 'OS' is based on linux, then it isn't an OS at all! -- unless you simply ment that it will be 'linux-like'

this is unlikely to be very helpful (the whole purpose of java is to isolate you from the computer, the entire project of OSdev is to eliminate all isolation and directly control the computer)Most of us are Java programmers.
