There are many stable and mature operating systems out there few people have heard of. Many of them are not in the desktop market.

You probably don't want to hear that wikipedia has the answer to this homework question, so what are you trying to achieve here?

One thing that we do know is that there are no unknown operating systems.

Minix. Linus implemented Linux on a Minix machine; that's why, Linux had Minix file-system driver.

Well, there are those who claim to have been kidnapped by unknown operating systems. Some probing involved, apparently.

There is no unknown OS that I know, except for those I don't.

I think, he meant, an OS that is not very well-known.

Otherwise known as the Rumsfeld Algorithm (with a nod to Kurt Gödel).

Have you ever heard of a website called "Google"? It is very useful when researching this kind of question.

If the OS is not widely known, Google is unlikely to find it but we might happen to know about it. So it wasn't THAT unreasonable that he asked...
When you start writing an OS you do the minimum possible to get the x86 processor in a usable state, then you try to get as far away from it as possible.

Syntax checkup:
Wrong: OS's, IRQ's, zero'ing
Right: OSes, IRQs, zeroing
