About the signification of bare metal in Jargon File

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

You seem to be obsessed with this topic. I'm not sure there is anything useful to say that hasn't already been covered in previous threads.

I think you are missing the joke.

The author is poking fun at programmers who were unwilling to accept that programming in bytecode was no longer useful or relevant in most situations. The overhead of using an assembler, HLL, or operating system rapidly diminished as hardware became faster, until the increased ease of development outweighed the decreased code performance.

The Jargon File is a humorous publication. You should not take it seriously.
