It has been brought up multiple times, but no. Stack Exchange is a good resource with a lot of knowledgable people if you have any questions.

Alright, thank you!
Re: osdev but for programming language development ?
Some people here did set up such a site in response to a perceived demand ( http://www.compdev.net/ ), but it doesn't seem to have taken the world by storm yet.

Too many subforums, not made with a backing community, and too many posts by the village idiot.
Just ask in general programming if you want to start discussions, or SO if you don't.

Re: osdev but for programming language development ?
Actually, right now the biggest problem is that the primary moderator and the only one with access to the wiki (Bencz) seems to dropped off of the web for the past two months.Combuster wrote:Too many subforums, not made with a backing community, and too many posts by the village idiot.
The idea of a compiler dev wiki and forum seems to be a sound one, but there have been a lot of problems getting it off the ground. And, as Combuster points out, the fact that Bencz didn't ban TempleOS the first time he poked his nose in meant a lot of people wouldn't bother with the forum just from his presence alone.
Does anyone other than Bencz have permissions on the wiki at all, and is anyone else able and willing to take up the project if he doesn't reappear soon? (And why do I get the feeling I just volunteered?) I think we need to ensure that any future wikis and forums have at least two admins, to avoid this situation.

Lisp programmers tend to seem very odd to outsiders, just like anyone else who has had a religious experience they can't quite explain to others.

There'd still be the problem of critical mass.
To be honest, you should probably start a poll suggesting a subforum here for the time being and get the necessary people involved, and only then decide to move to dedicated hosting once you all agree it's the better option.

That makes a good deal of sense. One does get the feeling that the site was launched prematurely. Hosting a subforum here and building up a community before moving to a spearate site would be a wise move; I'll get on this ASAP.Combuster wrote:There'd still be the problem of critical mass.

I'd be interested in creating a site to more than just the one topic. OSDev, LangDev, etc.. I'm not a fan of stackexchange (omg, yes I said it). I'll be getting a server setup in the next couple of weeks and could put it on that as well.

Re: osdev but for programming language development ?
At a very quick glance, I can't see a post earlier than October 2014, so it probably hasn't even found its way into the search engines yet. Google will wait something like three months or so before listing a new site, just to make sure that it isn't a here today, gone tomorrow, site.iansjack wrote:Some people here did set up such a site in response to a perceived demand ( http://www.compdev.net/ ), but it doesn't seem to have taken the world by storm yet.
I have a website, totally unrelated to computing, but it took years before it was getting 100 visitors a day.
The continuous image of a connected set is connected.

Before making such dogmatic statements it would probably be wise to test them.Google will wait something like three months or so before listing a new site, just to make sure that it isn't a here today, gone tomorrow, site.
Despite being listed in Google searches the site has failed to take the world by storm. A more reasonable explanation of that can be found by actually visiting the site.

Re: osdev but for programming language development ?
I know I have typed things like "compiler development forum" into google in the past, and your site showed up nowhere in the first page or two - which is where it needs to be to get noticed. I have also visited the site. Every site starts off with very little contents; I suppose that is why it takes so long before it starts attracting a significant number of visitors.iansjack wrote:Before making such dogmatic statements it would probably be wise to test them.Google will wait something like three months or so before listing a new site, just to make sure that it isn't a here today, gone tomorrow, site.

Re: osdev but for programming language development ?
Correct - it appears on page 3 of that search.
Also correct - the problem is lack of content (which stems from lack of planning in setting up the site).

Thanks! I just created an account and yes it seems a bit dead.iansjack wrote:Some people here did set up such a site in response to a perceived demand ( http://www.compdev.net/ ), but it doesn't seem to have taken the world by storm yet.
Hi Schol-R-LEA, if this happens consider me a member of your community.Schol-R-LEA wrote:That makes a good deal of sense. One does get the feeling that the site was launched prematurely. Everyone: thanks for your replies.

Re: osdev but for programming language development ?
I agree that this is part of the problem - too little was done ahead of launching the site. There should have been a significant effort to prepare articles for the wiki before it went live, but it doesn't seem that many were written yet.iansjack wrote:Correct - it appears on page 3 of that search.

However, without being able to get into the wiki, there's no way to correct this. I was well prepared to contribute to it, but I could never get my account approved as the sole administrator seems to no longer be active on the web, there are anywhere else.
