ASCII Enthusiasts Programming Competition
If this is in the wrong place move it please
Hello OSdevers, I may have something that may interest you in the form of a little competition/jam for ASCII and ANSI programming.
The main theme of this jam is the usage of ASCII/ANSI and text based graphics to create programs only. The first competition, know as the 72 hour competition on the website, consists of a 72 hour jam to create something in the flavour of a console or terminal program but without It having to be run in the terminal. The other one, which is 10 days, is a more pure console affair and should be better for beginners as you won't be rushing around.
The 72 hour version will be from the 25th June to the 28th June while the 10 day version is from the 1st July to the 10th july.

And would you fix up my future entry because it doesn't follow the rules as well? After all, you owe me one now.gigaraptor487 wrote:If this is in the wrong place move it please

I am not as good as you in english and I completely don't understand this sentence.

You're not alone. I'm a native speaker and I honestly had trouble with the whole post.nevar wrote:I am not as good as you in english and I completely don't understand this sentence.

Re: ASCII Enthusiasts Programming Competition
I have no idea whatsoever what the OP is talking about.
Are the contestants expected to create some ASCII art (perhaps, with some ANSI escape sequences for color) that also happens to be executable code doing something witty or just achieving a well defined goal (say, computing the 47'th Fibonacci number)?
Or is it something entirely different?

Re: ASCII Enthusiasts Programming Competition
Well this Is embarrasing.
I am running a competition soon (details under the link in the original post) and It is mainly based around the idea of creating things that are terminal or console applications or in like them (the flavour of), anything you want to create (provided It is an application). There are two versions, the 72 hour and the 10 day versions, which are stated on the website.
Sorry about that

The website doesn't seem to work either. I'm getting a connection timeout.
Double the embarrassment!

Triple embarrassment, I think It may have been hacked by somebody.
Oh well, I hated webdev anyway.
We now have a new site here

Re: ASCII Enthusiasts Programming Competition
The terms are very vague. What does it mean to have the flavour of a console application? And why ASCII?

By the flavor/aesthetic of a console application is to mean that it looks like a console application but isn't necessarily one, for example using libtcod with the 72 hour competition.
Why ASCII? This was created on the Dwarf fortress forum where there is a taste of text graphics, although you can use other things like ANSI or UTF-8 if you wish.

Re: ASCII Enthusiasts Programming Competition
The main problem of this competition is that it's too vague. What exactly are the contestants going to compete in? Aesthetics? Code size? Something else? Really, how are the entries going to be rated and judged, using what criteria? How are you going to decide who wins?

Re: ASCII Enthusiasts Programming Competition
We were planning on just have the winners voted for based on what people think overall on the bay12 forums (I suppose it must seem vague since most of this was decided on the bay12 forums and you weren't there for it).
Re: ASCII Enthusiasts Programming Competition
If you're announcing it here, it would really be nice to document or link to the rules/criteria here, or, better yet, on the very website. Why can't I see this info up there? How would I know that I need to get it from a third place, a bay12 forum?

Re: ASCII Enthusiasts Programming Competition
This looks to be a total disaster. No (good) rules, arbitrary judging, no goal, and poor English; the founder being unclear (but also embarrassed!). Also, website problems, contradicting him (or her, or non-conformatory) self, posting the main rules and thread on a dwarf fortress forum, and finally only having 5 people participate states clearly that this is either a joke, or just sad. No wonder there are only 5 people participating, and no wonder I wouldn't touch this with a 13 tetrameter poll.
gigaraptor, you clearly lack management skills, basic quality control standards, and quite clearly haven't planned this out well enough. How old are you, and why did you think this is a good idea?
If I seem harsh, its because I am. But, I am only voicing my opinion. If you had at least a clearly defined GOAL, or maybe a NON ARBITRARY way of winning the competition, I wouldn't be this harsh. If you have done less planning then I did on a little lego project (when I was 5) on this, it clearly states that something is wrong.
PS: Please don't contradict yourself too. It makes people look dumb.
PSS: Something like this sounds fun though. If it were better, I would sign up
