Listening to music while OS devving

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

People's tastes change, and music you like to enjoy most in your spare time may not be what you play during working hours. If one of my true favourites would come along, it'd actually prevent me from doing work.

Is it still related to programmers when rock and metal occupy three of the top five genres overall? Especially if you also toss in that stereotype that classical music (#5) is mostly for oldies, and that "Alternative" music (#3) seems to be somewhat mistaken for one of the others if you look at the comments.

If you actually go look for statistics in this thread, there are four people that indirectly indicated they are metal listeners versus two that indicated to shun the genre (I'm number two, if you wonder). And that's probably about as inconclusive as it gets.

It was practically the same subject, as is clear from the first sentence of the first post.
I don't know if this counts as a rambling or not, but I've been wondering, what music if at all, do you listen to while programming?
I suspect that people's tastes won't have changed radically since then as it was only a year and a half ago. There are a couple of posts in there which show a taste for music other than metal, so it may be of interest to anyone finding false universals in a small dataset.

Honestly, I've worked long enough in this business and I can directly say that programmers of this sort are drawn to metal. Nothing wrong with that but they are definitely a major character in the business.

Japanese music, so you most likely will not be interested, but I like listening to some good M-Flo, Kick the Can Crew, Nujabes, Kreva, etc. Some real good hip-hop with mixes of R&B in some parts. Quite amazing imo.

Combuster, I really really liked the Chireiden Set link. Great stuff. In the past I've tried to stick to different types of psy/trance:ish songs because they are all like 8min long - and as you said, you really can't be bothered to pick out new songs every third minute... :D

You're welcome. :D

Actually, it's a remix of an entire game's soundtrack, and the author did one such set for pretty much each game in the series, so if you're wanting more, you now know where to look. I personally prefer the Chireiden one, but several of the others certainly have their charms as well so feel free to disagree on that

While this topic is back up near the top...

Been throwing some Daft Punk and Elton John in the mix. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a brilliant album.

This depends on my tastes and mood. Right now you might find me listening to disturbed, Nightwish, infected mushroom, pendulum, some classic rock and other metal such as slipknot, bullet for my valentine and lots of other stuff. I've also been known to listen to classical if the music has a loud and aggressive sounding theme to it.

I also listen to Skrillex. It is electro (and sometimes dubstep), but listening to this will help you save money on coffee, it's just perfect to stay awake without to destroy your brain with cafeine (except that keeping awake for long time damages the brain anyways, but I think the only solution to that is to go sleeping).

@OSwhatever: As you see, you're not the only exception :) Does any of them listen to electro or dubstep ?

I am just listening to a new album from Children Of Bodom: Halo Of Blood. It is a Finnish metal band that has had international success. I also have my cat on my lap but he is not very funny. However, this must be the General Rambling post!

What I listen to changes from day to day.

I can give you some of my favourites right now, it's a real blending of old and new:

From Graveyard: The Siren, Fool in the end, Ain't fit to live here
Daft Punk: Instant crush
The pixies: Where is my Mind?
Martha Wainwright: Bloody Mother Fucking *******
Rocket Brothers: Kashmir
Modest Mouse: Float on
Awolnation: Sail
Interpol: Evil

Then basically everything from Beck. The albums Modern Guilt and Sea Change.
Fudge - Simplicity, clarity and speed.
