On the contrary, getting down to the assembly level gives you a much better understanding of what's going on, and if it was in my power I would ensure that every programmer had at least a basic understanding of assembly. It is, however, much easier to give everyone a basic understanding of C, which still teaches you a lot about how things work. In the end it all depends on the amount of time people are willing to put into things, and there will always be people who see programming as simply something to do that makes you money, they will be the ones that thrive in an environment where employers simply say "Can you do Java?" and don't expect anything more than basic business apps from them (and there are plenty of those jobs to go round).
