Looking for devopers
Looking for devopers
Hello everyone,
I am looking for developers to develop an OS based on the exokernel based operating system XOK developed by MIT. This is a newbie project, so if your not interested please move on.
Requirements:
-Must be proficient in C. Experience in x86 assembly language is a plus but not required.
If anyone is interested, please feel free to reply here, PM me, or email me.
Thank you,
~ Jin.L
P.S This OS is going to be free for all to use but it is not open-source.

Two questions for you:
Two questions for you:
- Why should we consider your project over our own (everybody wants their own pet project)?
- What are the defining characteristics of your OS?
Re: Looking for devopers
Thanks for the reply JackScott. Here's the answers to the questions that you have posed.
1) I never intended this to be a pet os. Instead I wanted to make a commercial OS that people are able to use for free. There is no reason why, people currently working on their own OS would participate in this project unless of course they want to. But people who are looking to build their own OS or people who had just given up building their own may be interested.
2) This OS will be based on XOK, meaning that it will be a exokernel based operating system. Further characteristics, are still undecided but I have a great idea of what this OS should be like. Therefore, I will need a group of developers, and together we shall decide upon the characteristics.
I don't have any prior programming training and I don't intend to lie about that. But I have a vision and I intend to see this project thru to the end. I'm currently in the progress of obtaining funding for this project but it is not sure if I will get the funds to fund this project, only time would tell. But if I am able to get funding than I will be able to pay you for your efforts. If you're interested please feel free to PM me, or email me.
For those of you who are not, I wish you good luck for your own projects.
Thank You,
Jin.L

I recommend you read the entire thing this time. (and no, you are not different. There are no exceptions)
Second, an OS is a huge task in design alone! With no prior programming experience how can you even begin to design how an OS would actually work? An OS is probably **The** most complicated thing to design because no design is perfect(or even close), it's just a matter of compromises. If you think you can create a close to perfect OS with few or little compromises then you clearly have not thought long enough.
You seem like a marketing person, though I'm not going to assume you are. Anyway, if this is going to be a commercial OS, then what is it's selling points? What makes it better to the end user than Windows, Linux, or some other pre-established OS?
Re: Looking for devopers
Well I dont think I am any different from anyone else. I've already read that article several times including and pretty much all of the articles here before making my first post. Sorry if it didn't seem like it.
And I don't intend to create a perfect OS but rather I wish to give XOK a better interface and maybe a better bootloader. Than after that slowly increase the performance of the OS. So i'm not really trying to design a whole new architecture but to improve one which already exists. I've read about 10-15 thesis and papers on the exokernel but maybe more than that.
Well I am not trying to compete or replace Windows, Linux or anything else I am just trying to propose to the public my version of what a operating system, and GUI should be. It is than up to the people to decide. There's no point in a selling point if you don't have a working system, or at least one with a proper GUI that is what I think.
I hope that answers your questions.
Sorry if I sounded rude or have offended you in anyway. And good luck with your projects.
If interested please feel free to PM me, or email me.
Thank You

Re: Looking for devopers
Three things:
1) You haven't mentioned any design past the "I want an exokernel". I think the majority would disagree with you about that actually qualifying as a design.
2) You proposed this as your first post. Nobody knows you - can we see at least some proof about your abilities? How many points do you score on the OS developers quiz when you do it the first time?
3) I'm building an exokernel too.

Re: Looking for devopers
I intend to discuss that with the developers that have been selected. Just trying to protect my idea for the mean time.Combuster wrote:Three things:

Well, as i've said before I don't have any prior programming experience so I am not sure that I can provide a proof of abilities. Looking at it I would probably score a 0. Like I said i'm not a programmer.2) You proposed this as your first post. Nobody knows you - can we see at least some proof about your abilities? Cool3) I'm building an exokernel too.
Give me some pointers some time
One more thing, although this may not look like it, this is actually a job opening. This is not a community project.
If interested please feel free to PM me, or email me.
Thank You

Re: Looking for devopers
If it's a job opening, what's the pay?
Re: Looking for devopers
Well I guess it would be in the range of 2k to 4k/month . But I won't be able to pay you at the moment until I get more funding from banks or investment firms.
If interested please feel free to PM me, or email me.

Re: Looking for devopers
Yen? Euro? USD?
2-4 thousand of any of those things is not going to be a lot for what is essentially full-time work for at least 10 years for several people (see SkyOS, Linux kernel). And you're not going to get a bank or investment firm talking to you until you have a prototype. The prototype you're going to have to show them will basically have to be fully-functional as far as the kernel goes, as well.
Sorry, but things aren't looking good here.

JackScott,...essentially full-time work for at least 10 years for several people...
Don't you remember when you thought you could write an entire O/S, by yourself, that everyone else wanted, for free, in the Xmas holidays and still have a normal life ? Where's your Aussie optimism?

Re: Looking for devopers
As I've said before the main object of this project is to modify the operating system create by MIT called XOK. Meaning that we are able to save considerable amount of time. In addition, most of the code will be implemented in libraries in users pace meaning that there will not be as much restrictions placed as compared to writing in kernel space. So I estimate that we should be able to get a working prototype within few months. It would be buggy but still a prototype.JackScott wrote:Yen? Euro? USD?

As far as the kenel goes it is fully functioning just with some bugs in it that would need to be fixed.
If interested please feel free to PM me, or email me.

P.S Its in USD and your pay would be further increased if I get more funding.

Re: Looking for devopers
Well, given that 90% of all software projects fail, and that you obviously have no relevant experience not to make it fail, add to that your stubbornness, well...
Experience is a good teacher, but unfortunately not a kind one. Good luck to you, and everybody else who are trying to get their wages in a few month's time.
I doubt there's more to say about it...

Lol, but still thank you.
And thank you to the developers who has signed up so far. I think 5 developers should be enough. That mean a few more to go.
If interested please feel free to PM me, or email me.
Thank You

P.S Please include your resume if you do pm or email me.

Update:
We are looking for more developers who specialize or are great at creating drivers.
If interested please feel free to PM me.
