Need netbook advise

Post by Zacariaz »

Hello all you happy people. It has been some time since last I bothered, but now the time has come for me to, once again, to mess around with stuff I don't understand and thus I need some advice from the experts. ;)

Anyhow, the project as it is now is not really that complicated. It has to do with LFS and such, but all the in good time.

What I need is a netbook/laptop/notebook/whateverbook with Linux friendly hardware and preferably one of those macstyle keyboards (you know what I mean, I hope)

All other things are, for now, completely irrelevant. That includes price, quality, size, etc. I would like to go minimalistic, like the Eee or something, but I really want one of those keyboards :D

I realise that this doesn't pose much of a challenge, but it'll come, don't worry ;)

Anyway, I hope you can provide a few ideas.

Best regards

Try OpenPandora. Complete with Wifi, keyboard, and touchscreen. I've heard of people buying them for under $250 excluding delivery.

You could build your own with a Beagleboard.
My OS is Perception.

I really like my Eee 900, which has been pretty good with Linux (Gentoo). The wireless card was hard to work with, and required madwifi, but it broke after a few months anyway, and I replaced it with a nicer 4967agn, which has Intel-contributed native drivers. Everything else works like a charm. It's pretty much the last Eee model that has a 8.9" screen and doesn't have a shiny exterior that looks like crap when you touch it, as well as a SSD. The keyboard is good, but not the same as an Apple pseudo-chiclet keyboard; it is easy to find a replacement if you happen to spill sprite on it, if that matters. It has pretty bad battery life (~3 hrs) which is apparently improved in the Eee 901. I can't say it's the best option for right now, but it was pretty ideal a year and a half ago when I bought it.

I'm guessing that pretty much anything you buy will be compatible with Linux except for the wireless and maybe the graphics, as it is with pretty much all boxes. I would look around for something that looks good, _then_ check if it will be compatible.

Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated.
I've been looking around and have more or less decided to go with the new n450 cpu, which in turn means less options, but I think it's worth it.

I'll return when I've got more to say about the subject.
