Happy New Year! In 2009 & 2010 I....

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

Happy New Year! In 2009 & 2010 I....

Post by chase »

In 2009 I...
  • Became a Redhat certified Instructor and Examiner
  • Refinanced my house
  • Lost 80 lbs (down to 225lbs now but I'm 6'7" so it's not that far from what I should be)
  • Spent a lot of time training to run my first half-marathon. I've been playing with running gadgets and such this year.
  • Got my first stress fracture in a foot two weeks ago.
  • Dropped out of my first half-marathon (see above) Technically the race is in Jan but my doctor told me it wasn't happening in Dec. I did run a 10k race at least.
  • Got two Westie puppies with my girlfriend.
  • Built my first Hackintosh machine. (Using a netbook for now but if I like it I'll probably buy a MacBook Pro in 2010)
  • Changed servers for OSDev.
  • Wrote a Java EE course for Sun (and helped on some of the upcoming certs)
In 2010 I...
  • Hope to finish a half-marathon or even a full.
  • Might learn Objective-C
  • Want to finish one of my side projects to re-write an old BBS game
  • Will Improve OSDev.org
  • Really want to house train our puppies
  • Will likely take up some extra hobby that my girlfriend and I can do together. Maybe painting.
  • Want to learn Spanish. I've already started but spoken languages are hard, if only I could learn them as fast as computer languages.

Damn you Facebook, I went to look for the "Like" button.

In 2009 I:
  • Went on my my first intercontinental holiday in order to meet a girl I met on the Internet.
  • Had the worst night of my life in a hotel near Heathrow Airport.
  • Almost moved to Berlin.
  • Failed 2/8 of my University subjects.
  • Dated a girl on the other side of the continent.
  • Got CT scans done for a brain tumour.
  • Haven't coded a single line except for University. Even then, as few as possible.
In 2010 I:
  • Will finish/continue learning German.
  • Will date a girl who lives within 500km of me.
  • Hope to restart work on my operating system.
  • Will get polyphasic sleeping working. Somehow.
  • Won't fail anything.

I've heard polyphasic sleep is not as cool as it's cracked up to be... (even one of the major advocates of it had to stop doing it as a lifestyle eventually)

In 2009 I...
  • Graduated high school
  • Started college
  • Got 8 extra computers
  • Got back together with my first girlfriend
  • Wrote a working scripting engine mostly single-handed (at work)
In 2010 I...
  • Will move out to my own house! (hopefully this month or the next)
  • Will try even harder to not just drop out of college..(last semester I was taught nothing but flow charting.. ugh!)
  • Hopes to try out some other hobbies than programming/anything to do with computing.
  • Will exercise more...
  • Will try once again to learn dvorak
  • Will learn a pure functional language
  • Will try to meet more people and be more "social" with people I do know

I agree with that :P. My IM status: "2010. another year. same life".
