SkyOS halted

Post by Dex »

I am shocked and sad to see SkyOS halted, it was always held up as a hobby OS that had made it to the next stage.
I did write some time ago ( on this forum) that, in closed source OS's like this (that seem to port a new linux program, by the day), how much code is linux under the bonnet ?.
Now i have read that he is making a linux kernel ver and as most things already ported

I do not want to call another OS project, as we all know how much work goes into them, but i do ?, why you would code a C/C++ linux like OS, when you can just use linux ?, if its to learn than study old linux vers etc.

Maybe the point of the project wasn't the new kernel, but a new GUI.

Just a thought.

That is disappointing. A Linux distribution with a customized GUI and API is no where near impressive as a full blown OS.
My OS is Perception.

My question is this: if he thinks his old kernel is useless, why doesn't he open source it?

I can think of half a dozen reasons not to, the insistence of the OSS community that everything should be OSS not being the least among them...
Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.

If it's his code, then he has the power to decide how to license it. Even as a supporter of open source, I can think of some justifiable reasons a person can have for not opening the code. Such as:
  • Plans to sell licenses to the software itself.
  • Not wanting others to use the code (forking, etc.).
  • (This case.) Maybe the programmer has some future plans for the program, but doesn't feel like doing work on that code right now.
