Could anyone host this for me?

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

Could anyone host this for me?

Post by earlz »

Hi, I'm about to retire from my current hosting. I can't seem to find any free hosting that lets you have a domain name and control over the email for it.

If someone knows of such a place, then tell me. Basically all I'm asking is a place to point my earlz.biz.tm at so my email doesn't die, and also(optionally) a place to point the domain at so that it will redirect to some free hosting page. I can point the domain at a website address, but email won't work if I do that.

"There's no such thing as a free lunch", and especially thanks to spam, I give you very little chance of finding an free mail server since that is bound to be abused...

Have you considered running your own?

If you can set different DNS records for your domain, then why not just use google apps? So they've got all your precious email and index it so you can search it easily. They may even be evil despite the "do no evil" motto, but beggars can't be choosers. :)

Well I have slow and unreliable satellite internet.. with my website redirect, I could handle that, but for email not so much'

edit:

Ok, I found this place http://www.byethost.com/free-hosting/ (I actually used them like back in 2005 or 2006) so I'm going to try and see if it will work for my basic needs..

Definitely do this - I host my own site at home, and some other sites using Dreamhost paid hosting, but all my email goes through Google Apps.

Well I did get it all setup so now my email goes through google apps.. kinda annoying that i have to go to http://mail.google.com/a/earlz.biz.tm/ to login to my email though instead of just gmail.com

Ok, new hosting request. an SVN server that will allow direct importing of repositories(Like I have the /var/svn folder backed up from my old hosting and now wish to get it back online)

They do allow you to create a zone specifically for mail, like mail.earlz.biz.tm for instance.

That's very messy, use svnadmin and dump your repositories.. only then someone will be more willing to host it.
