i took debian and wine 1.1.15 for a test drive.
it's worse than i thought.
the instant i started installing the .NET Framework 2.0, the box rebooted.

There is also a mono included precompiled livecd called monoppix.

Any of OpenSuSE, Ubuntu, Arch, and Fedora ought to be fine. Personally I use Arch but I believe Novell makes pre-release binary packages for OpenSuSE.

while it's a pretty good opportunity to learn more about .net internals, it's still not ready for production the way mono is..

I've never been a propenent of Microsoft, but CLR isn't a closed standard. In fact, its published with ECMA. IIRC Java isn't truly and open standard. I remember reading something about it technically being owned by Sun. Might be wrong, but either way CLR isn't closed.
