_tkinter tk8.4.so problem

I compiled Tkinter (TCL8.4 and TK8.4) for use with Python 2.3.1, but Python can't find tk8.4.so when I try to compile it. I'm running Red Hat Linux 8.0. Does anyone have any kind of experience with .so files and getting the system to properly locate the little piggies?
