What keeps you going?
What keeps you going?
As one who suffers from procrastination I wondered how you all seem to be able to work on your projects and not get distracted. Having entered the christmas holidays I now have a load of free time but for some reason I find I will start working and after 5 minutes be distracted by a book or game and end up not doing anything. It only happens for hobbies and in areas like schoolwork I tend not to get distracted.
When I do manage to get something done I find that I can ride on the success and am less likely to be distracted but after a long break I find it hard to get back in.
So what keeps you going?

Obviously your OS "project" has no chance of making you rich or famous and basing an company on such an wrong idea is childish. I pity the "potential" investors in such an idea (if they exist)
If you intend to waste your life for money or becoming rich or famous then OS Dev is not the right path.
Do not take it badly because my advice is given from kindness as a pointer or a warning that you are wasting your life time.
If you could stop dreaming for a second and think logically you would see that your OS target market share is already filled up by some super powerful corporations that outperform you 1000:1 in all areas including understanding, analysis and features.
To answer the original question:
========================
Nothing "keeps" me going but in a miraculous ways I still exist and "go without going"
A few hints:
1)There is this Acceptance of what IS
2)There is this immense JOY of Creation
3)There is this Enthusiasm of Understanding
And then there is the perception of the Eternal Truth

@bontanu:
I doubt you are aware of the exact parameters of his OS as it differs significantly from the norm here. As such it also differs much from the criterium on which the standard "Dont expect to make money out of your OS" is based.
Bearing much resemblance to an embedded OS, it has to find a place in a market area where there are tens of thousands of other OSes, of which the vast majority is making money. Succeeding there is much easier than succeeding in a saturated market which is dominated by three huge players.
As for myself, I do OS development out of hobby, and in the hope I can help other people by trying things out and getting new information into the world. Consider it a form of academic research.
And of course for the kick when things like hardware accelerated graphics start to work.

I am aware of this "dream" parameters. He made no screenshots or binary release available and hence we are kept in ignorance here on purpose by him IMHO.Combuster wrote:@bontanu:

And NO in embedded market you can not succeed with an OS. OS is free or cheap there because there are a lot of open source embedded OS available with all sorts of features and styles. The only problem is interfacing with unknown proprietary hardware.
You stand more chance with a desktop OS than an embedded OS. Think about it... in fact 2 such event occurred in time: GeOS and BeOS did challenge Windows and were attacked and killed. Both were very good GUI kind of OS.
In desktop world the hardware is changing more slowly and it is more uniform than in embedded world hence a general GUI like desktop hobby OS has more chance in there (but of course still very low because of Linux/ Windows combo)
They key of making money in embedded world is having a lot of money to build a very cheap device in mass production and the social and commercial relations to advertise and place it in a good shelf in a lot of supermarkets.
You need a minimal budget of at least 1.000.000 euro for this. I know because I have worked in this area and produced such devices hence I have first class experience.
You can make money with an embedded OS if you have a contract to design a custom one for a very specific custom hardware / client and you are able to do it fast (3-6 months maximum).
A pre defined OS is of no use here because the hardware changes rapidly from one product to another in a search for the cheapest production costs.
Think about it: if you find 100.000 boards dumped in China with a 4 euro lower price than what you had yesterday then it makes sense to tray to adapt your OS+applications to it in a hurry because you gain an extra 400.000 euros in profit.
Hence C is king in embedded world contrary to popular belief that ASM is suited there. Ironically ASM is suited on x86 desktops.
Also it make sense to build your own chips if the product line is stable like in routers/ firewalls/ gateway/ p2p filters. And as an start-up you will have huge problems and need huge money to start making your own chips in order to compete well established ones.
More details about my criticism of his "dream" DINS OS you can find in his DINS "talk news" thread...
That is a nice reasonAs for myself, I do OS development out of hobby, and in the hope I can help other people by trying things out and getting new information into the world. Consider it a form of academic research.
And of course for the kick when things like hardware accelerated graphics start to work.
However take care on that adrenaline rush or "kick" when you make things work for the first time.... Remember it will pass away... Hence establish yourself firmly into constant joy
Just kidding: I have to try that hardware accelerated GFX kind of "kick" soon

Ha ha ha..."In this country, you gotta write the source code first. Then when you write the source code, you get the power. Then when you get the power, then you get the women."
Source code gives you no power... no power at all. Apparently you do not know what power is...
Yes "normal" woman are attracted to power...
But programmers and geeks are the last attractive humans for a woman exactly because they spend too much time writing source and have no chance whatsoever of getting any kind of power
First hand experience also Just state that you have no drams of power or becoming rich and you are an IT specialist or a programmer and you will see woman run away from you with light speed.
Maybe only if you state that you seek enlightenment they will run away with greater than light speed

Re: What keeps you going?
I can't say what's kept me going, because the truth is that I stopped working on my OS a long time ago. Six years ago I met the woman I eventually married, and then my free time quickly disappeared. It's a good reason not to do OS dev though.
My hope is to do OS dev as part of my job, not just as a hobby. I'm getting a lot closer... maybe in a year or two.
My hope is to do OS dev as part of my job, not just as a hobby. I'm getting a lot closer... maybe in a year or two.
Top three reasons why my OS project died:
- Too much overtime at work
- Got married
- My brain got stuck in an infinite loop while trying to design the memory manager

And even today you could make lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ from OS Dev, if you combind it with Ai, for say a self learning robots.
You need to play to your advantages, no graphical interface etc, just number crushing.
Remember the human brain is a advanced OS and win/linux is not even as advanced as a worm .
But to answer the topic, you have to set your self goals and go for them, if you give up before you get there, you have failed.
If thats not enough to keep you going, than nothing will.

Hi,
I myself do not know . It's just that everyone makes fun of me , although I am practically an idiot , I want to prove that I am good ,atleast to myself .OS development in my case , is mostly for self gratification . I dont know whether I will be professional kernel developer or not. But if there is a will there is always a way .
I want to prove that even idiots can do os - development ,coz I am an idiot
Regards

Re: What keeps you going?
Well, I beg to differ. Source code most definitely DOES give you power, if you can recognize it and you know how to use it (the source). Here's a quick little example... at work, we had a problem with a program that was purchased from one of our vendors. That vendor claimed the problem wasn't a bug as we thought, but a little bit of searching showed they were using an open source library. Since I then had access to that code, I was able to look and I did find the problem in the code. I brought that to the attention of the vendor's development team, and they had a new binary for us in a couple of days that fixed the problem. In this case, using the source gave me the power to prove the vendor wrong and get something that was functioning incorrectly fixed. Without the source I wouldn't have been able to do that.bontanu wrote: Source code gives you no power... no power at all. Apparently you do not know what power is...
The saying "use the source, Luke" refers to the same kind of power you'd get by using the Force.
Wow, running away at light speed? Or even faster? I seem to recall that as you approach the speed of light, your mass increases and so it requires an ever increasing amount of energy to keep accelerating, to the point that it requires nearly infinite energy to travel at light speed. If I could figure out how to harness that, I'd solve the world's energy problems and become extremely wealthy in the process.bontanu wrote: Yes "normal" woman are attracted to power...

Anyway, the real reason women run from "programmers and geeks" isn't because of the lack of power or riches or whatever, but because of the inherent social problems that all too many geeks have. If more geeks would realize that and work toward getting over it, they'd find their chances of getting laid would be greatly increased. I'm not going to go in to much more than that because this isn't the proper forum for giving dating advice, and the "don't feed the trolls" sign is flashing rapidly in my head. But as a programmer, network engineer, and all around geek that is happily married to a very smart and very attractive woman who gave me 2 adorable little children, I can definitely say women don't run screaming from us.
Sorry, I should have listened to that "don't feed the trolls" sign much sooner than this.
