Gaming: In general

Post by inflater »

As I see there aren't much HL2 fans on this forum, let's talk about general gaming (PC platform only please.)

So, my questions are:
1. What was your first game? (Can be on a PSX, NES, arcade, etc), and in what year did you play it?
2. What do you play now? /e.g. shoot-em-up games, MMORPG, racing, can be a concrete name of the game/
3. How do you like today's game industry and programmers?
4. What game(s) do you like at most?
5. On the other side: do you have any games that totally were boring or stupid?
6. Do you like "old skool" games, like e.g. turning your dusty DOS machine on, or a 8-bit "PC" ?
If not, explain why.
7. What CPU and graphics card do you own and are you satisfied with it?
8. What number of games did you fully complete? (In GTA series, you can include that if you completed the main storyline.)

That's it. I'll try to answer my questions:

1. As far as I remember, Lotus III, Lamborghini American Challenge and Wolfenstein 3D on a 80486 back in december 1998.
2. For me, it's 3D shooter games. (half life, counter strike 1.6, Painkiller, Call of Duty series, etc)
3. As I see, today's game corporations are focusing on having a high graphics potential, but less playability, and that games are boring then. For me it's Crysis, has a stunning graphics but I don't like that type of games.
4. Half life series (:P), Mafia, GTA series, call of duty series, Serious Sam, DOS games in general
5. Crysis, Splinter cell, Medal of Honor, stealth games in general, Warcraft, WoW, Colin McRae Dirt, last two NFS series (most wanted and prostreet)
6. Hell yeah. 8)
7. CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ 3.2GHz, Sapphire Radeon HD 3850 256 MB VRAM.
I'm satisfied.
8. 30 as far my list goes on... +/- 10 which I maybe forgot. On EASY or MEDIUM. (Win32 only, ms-dos games count as far as 20.)

Regards

1. Duck Hunter!!! for the NES I believe. =)
2. Strategy, RPG.
3. I think they are using alot of bulky libraries, but besides that I think they are fine.
4. Zues/Poseidon, Morrowind/Oblivion, COD4, and Super Mario Bros.
5. HL2 ( )
6. HECK YEAH. The only legacy games I like are from the NES/SNES era tho.
7. Intel E6600 @ 3.4GHz and a Nvidia 7950GT OC, I think it is ok, ill be upgrading soon though to a better vid card.
8. ~5, I get sidetracked easily, and then it is hard for me to get 'back in the game'.

1. I got given a SEGA 8bit megadrive when i was about 4 (1996) with a few games, so i guess Sonic 2, Virtua Racing, Desert Strike or Lemmings.
2. I don't tend to play a lot of games, but FPSU, with the occasional RPG
3. It's ok, i'm a bit bored by whats out there though - more variety please!
4. Looking forward to Gears of War 2! COD4 is immense, Bioshock was good, Crackdown was pretty good too... Oblivion was fun.
5. Some shooter games are stupid.. and i find the Ninja style japanese games very dull. and GTA IV was over-hyped, which i was quite upset about, i loved the older GTA's
6. yes :) i think everyone does, they bring back old memories. and i think the games were more original - too much time is spent on graphics/physics now-a-days
7. Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83GHz (happy with), Intel PRO graphics (NOT happy with)
8. erm... quite a few. pretty much all the sega games (except "toe jam & earl"!) many of the PC strategy games i own (AOE, AOE II, AOM, CivIII...), all my xbox 360 games (crackdown, GoW, COD4, GTA IV...)

[quote="inflater"]As I see there aren't much HL2 fans on this forum, let's talk about general gaming (PC platform only please.)

1. A Pong console hooked to a TV in our cellar. Not sure about the year... around 1978 I'd daresay.
2. No time for anything more elaborate than a round of Konquest or Kbattleship these days.
3. They did wonders re 3D VR's, but they suck royally when it comes to long-term gameplay balance.
4. WoW was great before the powergamers and farmers ruined it.
5. I tend to forget them after first try. America's Army is probably the dumbest I've ever seen.
6. Heck yea... I keep emulators around just for them. Mule, The Bard's Tale, Lemmings...
7. Core Duo (not Core 2), 1.66 GHz, and a X1400 GPU in a laptop. More than enough for me.
8. A dozen, perhaps. The rest I couldn't be bothered with, either because they became boring or requiring ridiculous amounts of time / practice to complete.
Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.

1. I believe it was Popeye on the TRS-80 back in '83 or so.
2. I play mostly any games on consoles as I've moved away from PC gaming except for some MMOs
3. It's like it's always been; some games are good, some games suck. The crappy games seem to get more attention then the good ones however.
4. Ones that don't turn me away from them.
5. I tried to only get games that I enjoyed like the old Sierra Adventure games.
6. I have an NES with a bunch of carts, SNES with some carts and some other old consoles that I play every now and then.
7. Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 @ 2.3GHz, BFG nVidia 8600 GT 512MB; works just fine.
8. A lot, even side quests/missions if the game had them.

1. I forget.
2. RPG's and pick-me-up-for-an-hour-set-me-down-games. (Think Wii)
3. Too focused on graphics - Although, I'm impressed with Capcoms choice to develop their new Megaman game for the NES. A step in the right direction, IMO. (Using Wii's virtual console.)
4. Final Fantasy ..., Tales of ..., Dragon Quest ..., Star Ocean, Super Mario Galaxy, etc.
5. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
6. If the NES is 'old-skool', than yes. Give me some good pixelated love any day.
7. The only game I play on my computer is nethack, so 80x25?
8. I'd say around 60, maybe 70.

1. What was your first game? (Can be on a PSX, NES, arcade, etc), and in what year did you play it?
My first game was Zelda on the NES. Although if I remember correct this was around the year 1990 in which I was about 6 years old.
2. What do you play now? /e.g. shoot-em-up games, MMORPG, racing, can be a concrete name of the game/
Anything that has great game play and enjoyable graphics (I empathize enjoyable and not great)... I like MMORPG, RTS, RPG, FPS, and a lot really.
3. How do you like today's game industry and programmers?
I am not very happy with the quest for the ultimate graphics. I would rather see a lot more drive for great physics and AI.
4. What game(s) do/did you like at most?
Half-Life Series, World Of Warcraft(Forth MMORPG), Final Fantasy Series (Not played some of the latest and the MMORPG one), Anarchy Online(Second MMORPG), Ultima Online(First MMORPG), ...
5. On the other side: do you have any games that totally were boring or stupid?
Everquest 2(Third MMORPG) comes to mind quickly...
6. Do you like "old skool" games, like e.g. turning your dusty DOS machine on, or a 8-bit "PC" ? (If not explain)
Yeah! I should do that more. Some of the older games have a very great story line!
7. What CPU and graphics card do you own and are you satisfied with it?
AMD64 3200 512MB with GeForce 6800 256MB
8. What number of games did you fully complete? (In GTA series, you can include that if you completed the main storyline.)
HL Series, Command & Conquer(First RTS) & Command & Conquer Red Alert(Second RTS), Quake1 and Quake2(Second FPS), Doom1 and Doom2 (First FPS), Wolfenstien, Total Annihilation(Second RTS), and I imagine one or two others that I am not thinking about.

2.I like football (I'm talking about the sport)also I like to play games about football
and my favorite game is FIFA.
3.unfortunatelly games tody demand alot of RAMs and alot of video card memory,
so if I want to play the latest version of the game,I have to buy a new computer each year,
which somthing I won't do.
4.FIFA also I liked IGI and red alert
5.forgiveme to say that, but I never liked HL.
6.yes I do...
7.I have intel celeron,3GHz,and builtin video card which is 64MB,Also I'm not satisfied with
what I have,because till now I can only play FIFA2007 not FIFA2008 :(
8.super Mario and red alert, also I won the italian league in FIFA(if that counts)

Also I have a question which one is better a builtin video card or normal video card,
assuming that both of the cards have the same amout of memory?

1. My first game was Commander Keen, for DOS. I played it in about 1994, though it was released in 1992.
2. I quite enjoy a good RPG or RTS. For instance, Age of Empires II or Final Fantasy. The big problem is finding a decent RPG or RTS... 90% of both genres are rubbish. I also like FPS games, most specifically Counter Strike: Source.
3. In broad terms, they seem to have lost the capability to invent new gameplay, even though computers are getting better and better every year. It seems most of the original games came out in the 80s, and since then everything has gone downhill in terms of inventiveness.
4. Counter Strike: Source.
5. Call of Duty 4. I just found it completely graphic driven... no gameplay at all, even when playing with friends.
6. I love them. Playing Commander Keen or Super Mario World* on my old PC is great, I can do it for hours.
7. Intel Pentium Dual-core E2160 + Gainward Geforce 8800GT 512MiB. I love my Gainward card, it is silent and powerful. The processor has enough power for almost everything I do, except playing High-def movies... it can't quite do it in real time.
8. Enough that I can't remember.

* Yes, I own the SNES cartridges. I play them on the PC because I like the controller better.

1. Probably "Killer Gorilla" on a BBC Model B - around 1985. First PC game? Either Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (text game) or Sopwith (ASCII art  ).

2. Wolfenstein: ET and other FPS. I also like "Elite"-style open ended space games.

3. Don't really know. By the time I buy games (very rare nowadays), they tend to be re-released on cheap labels, so I don't have much first hand contact.

4. Wolfenstein: ET, X2: The Threat, HL2 and others - I tend to go through phases.

5. Yes - I had some awful LucasArts flying one a few years back. The other really annoying one was Douglas Adams' Starship Titanic. Don't be tempted to try it!

6. Absolulely. I even have Beebem so I can play my old BBC games

7. Overclocked Athlon XP1800, NVidia GeForce 4 Mx 220. At the time of purchase, I was completely happy with this, but it's got very creaky over the last few years. I plan to purchase a Core 2 Duo 8500 and NVidia Geforce 9800GT - that should last for a bit!

8. I completed GTA: Vice City, HL2 3 times (starting with easy and working up to hard - I will be playing it again on my new PC), Lots of NES, SNES and N64 games, MDK2 (brilliant game!) and lots of others.

Cheers,
Adam

1. Something on my ATARI 2600, year unknown . . . sometime in the 80's.
2. Shoot 'em up, Fighting, Interactive
3. Whatever
4. GTA, CS 1.6, Knock-Out Kings, Rock Band, things like that . . .
5. Batman for SNES (the only game that made me so mad I cried)
6. Nah, Wolfenstein use to be cool, but I couldn't stomach the graphics last time I played it. I am dying to buy a SNES so I can play mario cart and Street Fighter II again. Wait, I do play Double Dragon (Flash) on my PC, it's just like the real game.
7. Just some regular gear, nothing super special and yeah it's cool.
8. Billions. I usually beat games several times before moving on.

You didn't ask if we fancied cheats. I use to subscribe to Nintendo Power Magazine just to get the latest cheats for Megaman, Battle Toads, Mortal Combat (like that girl gets naked, yeah right!). I even had a power glove and it sucked. Not much of a gamer now a days but if you were to catch me playing a game it might be CS 1.6 currently.

Hehe, seems that this thread grew a little :) anyways that's ok.

You pagans! What's wrong with HL?

Anyways, with mentioning cheats, I usually complete the game without cheats and then, I'll play different missions and have fun with e.g. god mode or guns that weren't available in that level. (Call of duty 4 + RPG [rocket propelled grenade] + infinite ammo cheat = total ownage ;)... the same for panzerfausts in return to castel wolfenstein)

As for the 8-bit computers, I see that here are many NES/BBC fans. It's a shame I wasn't teen-age in 1980's.
AJ wrote:HL2 3 times (starting with easy and working up to hard - I will be playing it again on my new PC)
Don't forget to set everything to maximum then. It's a engine back from 2004, but even today it does perform well and runs perfectly on slower machines. (BTW I've had Geforce4 MX440 agp4x and HL2 was totally unplayable there. :D)

Anyways, you can freely comment as stated in my first post.

1. What was your first game? (Can be on a PSX, NES, arcade, etc), and in what year did you play it?
I can't remember what came first, my dad's computer running this scroller with this rocket you could fly around and shoot things (I have absolutely no idea what it was called, so if you know please tell me), or my friends place with a NES running mario/duck hunt.

2. What do you play now? e.g. shoot-em-up games, MMORPG, racing, can be a concrete name of the game
Guitar Hero III, I-should-really-do-something-useful-instead-games (think KDEgames and the ones bundled with windows)

3. How do you like today's game industry and programmers?
Publishers go too much for fancy graphics, letting down the games with (most importantly) good gameplay

4. What game(s) do/did you like at most?
Right now my fav games are: Unreal/UT, Command&Conquer TS/firestorm/RA2/yuri's revenge, Guitar Hero, Touhou (Perfect Cherry Blossom), OpenTTD
Previously I played a lot of ZZT (which I quit when the community was reduced to chats about what you do together in bed. The program itself is still legendary IMO, just dated) and the pokemon RPGs (still fun when you have lots of time to waste)

5. On the other side: do you have any games that totally were boring or stupid?
Most sequels suffer from overdone-graphics-syndrome, ruining the C&C series, Unreal series.
In the category stupid: insert all games that are obviously broken (like C&C tiberian dawn keeps crashing). Since I normally don't get games unless on recommendation, my stuff is preselected well enough, so I can't remember when I saw a truly bad game last.

6. Do you like "old skool" games, like e.g. turning your dusty DOS machine on, or a 8-bit "PC" ? (If not explain)I do play a good share of oldskool, mainly because they predate aforementioned graphics era, and have thus better gameplay than graphics on average. My collection includes things like Commander Keen, Cosmo's Cosmic Adventures, Doom, Quake, ZZT, One Must Fall 2097, Jetpack, Jazz Jackrabbit, and all other find -iname '*.com' :D

7. What CPU and graphics card do you own and are you satisfied with it?
Other than Guitar Hero 3 (which requires by far too much of a PC), I was pretty happy with my Athlon XP 2200, 256MB ram, GeForce 6200 (which runs everything else). I have two newer boxes in the meantime because the Athlon XP's motherboard broke down.

8. What number of games did you fully complete? (In GTA series, you can include that if you completed the main storyline.)
Doom 1, Quake 1, The default games bundled with ZZT (of itself, its a GCS, so I beat quite a few more games that were written for it), All episodes of Commander Keen, Unreal (original episode, return to na pali, ONP, UT), Starcraft, Tiberian Sun, Red Alert II, Loom, Monkey Island, OMF (at the highest difficulty), Guitar Hero III (on hard, still need 6 songs to complete expert), Pokemon games (of the first generation), Kameo, and probably a lot more (my laptop has few games)
and if it counts, I beat MS hearts in four games (each round collecting all points) 8)

Addict, I know :D
