I don't think microsoft is hunting hobby OS developers who are implementing FAT support. But even so, FAT16 is public domain I believe and I'm not 100% on FAT32. I don't implement either just to be on the safe side, but I wouldnt worry to much about it unless you ever posed a threat to MS.

It is comparatively easy to implement. (As supposed to "real" alternatives like, say, ext3.) And having FAT support means you can have devices shared between Windows and your OS.

(Of course you could format those devices to ext2 / ext3 and install ext2fs drivers to your Windows. But it's not the same as booting your hobby OS on your friend's system and browse around on his hard drive to show off a bit.)
Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.

FAT32 has patents on the long filename stuff. Other than that, it's all in the public domain and you're allowed to use it. To stick to the safe side, don't use anything to do with LFN support and you'll be fine ;)

LFN == Long file names.

Please search in the future, and believe me, your project is a hobby... clearly it's not very professional. ;)
