Is it A No, no to use fat filing system
Is it A No, no to use fat filing system
Their is a question i am not sure about. That's why i don't use fat filing systems for my os. Why you guys still use it. Isn't a no, no to use that for open source for your os esp hard drives? Get's me thinking that microsoft will sue use all
Re: Is it A No, no to use fat filing system
I don't think microsoft is hunting hobby OS developers who are implementing FAT support. But even so, FAT16 is public domain I believe and I'm not 100% on FAT32. I don't implement either just to be on the safe side, but I wouldnt worry to much about it unless you ever posed a threat to MS.

It is comparatively easy to implement. (As supposed to "real" alternatives like, say, ext3.) And having FAT support means you can have devices shared between Windows and your OS.PatrickV wrote:Why you guys still use it.
(Of course you could format those devices to ext2 / ext3 and install ext2fs drivers to your Windows. But it's not the same as booting your hobby OS on your friend's system and browse around on his hard drive to show off a bit.)
Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.

FAT32 has patents on the long filename stuff. Other than that, it's all in the public domain and you're allowed to use it. To stick to the safe side, don't use anything to do with LFN support and you'll be fine

Hobbies, i am not a hobbiest. I looked at some of your source code, eax it a microsoft paitent and i see a few of thos kernels and fat x bootsectors. Plus i am just not making a os for learning purposes, i like to create an os that people can use regaurding the fact i have to be careful what i use such as FAT and LFN support which PMattman said which i have no idea what LFN.

LFN == Long file names.
Please search in the future, and believe me, your project is a hobby... clearly it's not very professional.

oh i see. Plus it is not a hobby, i am trying to learn as well. Plus i don't want make it in to profit unless someone can take down microsoft that is. I am hoping that day will come. I don't think that is going to happen anytime soon. PLus bill gates is leaving microsoft for good so i don't know the new guy is going to roll
