I have been reading the alt.os.xx ... news group , I have seen a lot of ideas that never materialize ... ,they announce big but nothing really happens . Examples are ...
1) DirectX OS
2) AI OS
3) COM operating system
4) An OS that looks like Ubuntu Linux ...possibly with ubuntufs
5) Object Oriented Operating system .. etc ..
6) An OS written in Python
It seems that it is better to start humble and begin with something small , so that we can start working without losing interest . Then we can start small and simple steps to improve the existing kernel.What are your suggestions
Anyways I don't think I got you right (@Brynet-Inc: 10:25 AM ), but you want to create a "global OS" by portions programmed by the OSdev.org community? I don't think if that's a good idea. I e.g. like monolithic systems, short command lines, MS-DOS, etc and I don't think that everybody'll agree with me.

Some of them are my imaginations , but i have seen many such postings . COM -Component Object Model , if you have used DirectX or something like that you might know what is COM . COM allows you to build reusable language independent components . I am not against something COM does , but it could have been implemented in a much better way . Great Idea! , but not that good implementation .
I'd say it's not exactly a problem with setting realistic goals for an OS. An OS can be built for many reasons. I won't bother enumerating a list. For most of those reasons, however, the OS is purely experimental. The purpose of the OS is just to see what happens if you build an OS around some unusual design philosophy. There are only a few of us here who are really trying to build a "practical" OS -- that we know will definitely work, because it is built on well-known design principles.
So the bigger question would be: why do these posters on alt.os actually announce their OS and design? Is it because they are trying to say that in X months they are going to be selling this OS as a commercial product? I don't think so. They make the post to see if they can interest anyone in joining their experimental project, or to find out if there is already a project based on the same design that they could join.

I was not reading the recent posts but older ones . I want to read all the 80000 or so posts Bwi ha ha ha hah ha ha . I encountered similar concepts as i mentioned . Recent posts are really very good . Also search on sourceforge.com for kernels or operating systems :- you will find lots of projects of the above kind without a single line of code , just announcements . My point is to start experimenting with something small and working incrementally to achieve the desired goal . You cannot design everything to hell . For eg An OS in python or ruby or even VB should be huge undertaking and is not really worth the hassle and the project never materializes .
