DVI-A -> DVI-D?

DVI-A -> DVI-D?

Post by pcmattman »

Hi everyone,

I've been able to get my hands on another monitor and so I want it as my third output on my laptop. The laptop though has a DVI-D output and the monitor goes through a VGA -> DVI-A adapter. I'm pretty sure these two aren't compatible from my searches, but I'd like to know for sure. Any ideas?

They're not. DVI-D == digital output, DVI-A == analog output, DVI-I == both. You can connect DVI-I to any other, DVI-D to DVI-D and DVI-A to DVI-A, but no others as the lines that contain signals won't be connected (one side sends digital, the other receives analog, no connection happens). DVI-I either sends or receives both analog and digital so it allows any connection.

Are you sure it's not DVI-I on the laptop? How many pins does it have?

Your laptop wouldn't have a dvi-a connector as they only have the analogue lines connected.

It doesn't have the 4 pins around the horizontal flat pin. So it has to be DVI-D.

I may be getting a new monitor anyway (22 inch) which'll have a proper DVI cable. That'll free up the VGA port and let me use the third monitor.

Thanks for the help!
