I have also been hacking away at a site - have a look here (you may have to wait a while - I'm hosting this from my DSL connection). It's based on Wordpress, so there's a blog too which integrates nicley.
Ucosty, you're site looks awesome too. The template is looking much better as well.
Some things that I thought could be included in the next issue also is an editorial at the beginning, a news section, and maybe a contents page (if we have enough content!)

I have to say that of all the formats/graphics etc, I like Steve's site the best.
Although I do like all the others as well.

By the way, I think that the style of the template is far better than in issue 1, but I'm not really a big fan of the OCR A Std font in the headline... It looks alright, but I prefer Bitstream Vera Sans Mono (downloadable here) or even Consolas better.
I also added your post (edited quite a bit) to the blog on my site idea. Also, if we did decide to use that for the site, would we want our own forums? I could make a theme to fit in nicely with the site.

Yeah, I want to include those things in the next magazine as well (contents, editorial, etc).
Your website looks quite nice. It's good that it fits in with the front cover theme, but that is hardly surprising.
As far as the forum is concerned, it's sort of a toss up as to how well it works. I mean, most people interested in System Call are already members here, the forum would just be unnecessary duplication. On the other hand, we cannot stay as a couple of threads in a subforum of OSDev.org forever, there is a whole Internet to conquer!
I am about to receive a new dedicated server in the mail, so when that happens would be the time to think about this.
I'll say more on friday night; I'm dead tired now.

True - I think it would be a good idea to wait (and see if we can build up some popularity with the magazine) before we add forums. I've had experience trying to run a forum with only four or five active users... Eventually it just looses momentum and dies!Yayyak wrote:As far as the forum is concerned, it's sort of a toss up as to how well it works. So we'll see if we can get a solid reader base first (which would mean some word-of mouth advertising that we should do)
I know what you mean... I should be working on assignments anywayYayyak wrote:I'll say more on friday night; I'm dead tired now.
This may not be a very good idea, but how about contacting the author of http://www.xkcd.com/ and ask permission to include a relevant comic strip in the magazine once in a while (assuming this project continues).
It's always nice with a good laugh between the dry reading.
Also, why is the first issue not yet available to the public? (meaning those who aren't using osdev.org).
One last thing. On my weblog, in my signature on various fora, etc. I have a link to system-call.org, assuming this is not a crime, which would be a surprise to me, wouldn't it be nice if someone with a talent for it, made a nice graphical signature which people could use?
Anyway, I'm so pleased that this looks to be something other than a stillborn mayfly and as always, I'm ready to provide you with any help my limited talents allow.

This was supposed to be a cool signature...

Sounds like a good idea - and I don't see why they'd object, as long as we credited them properly.Zacariaz wrote:This may not be a very good idea, but how about contacting the author of http://www.xkcd.com/ and ask permission to include a relevant comic strip in the magazine once in a while (assuming this project continues).

I think that that's only because nobody has got around to updating the website. But as you can see, the website is probably being replaced, and the new one (at least) will have a link.Zacariaz wrote:Also, why is the first issue not yet available to the public? When I have some time, I might have a crack at doing that. We definitely do want to build up a solid reader base, and this would be good advertising.Zacariaz wrote:One last thing. I'm not sure what you're getting at with the mayfly thing, but we would love you to help. Whether it's writing, design, or just more good suggestions - anything is good!Zacariaz wrote:Anyway, I'm so pleased that this looks to be something other than a stillborn mayfly and as always, I'm ready to provide you with any help my limited talents allow.

Ah, that's what you mean. It is the right word, it was just my ignorance.Zacariaz wrote:well, the mayfly was a hard translation and it would seem it was also incorrect, the word I was looking for was the name of the type of fly which lives only 24 hours.
Mayfly
The lifespan of an adult mayfly can vary from just 30 minutes to one day depending on the species.
We could make our own comic strip using this:

I personally would prefer Dex's comic in the magazine. The reason people read the magazine is for original content. The more original content there is, the more people are going to want to read it.
As for the website, my new server is being sent this week. Having half a continent to travel (via parcel post ) it may take a while. I'll update the website now.
As for a new site, it's probably best not to have forums (Steve is quite right, not enough members goes stale quickly). A blog and so on would be good, but it would work equally as a series of simple static pages. With a magazine that comes out every couple of months (at most) there's hardly a huge effort in adding a new cell to an HTML table. So it's all the same really.
If anybody else wants to make up a design for a site, then we could have a vote. A simple static page would be fine; we could then retrofit it onto Wordpress or Drupal. Perhaps give it a couple of weeks or so.

I see your point, however, the quality leaves something to be desired. Of course that's just my opinion.Yayyak wrote:I personally would prefer Dex's comic in the magazine. Re: System Call Magazine, Issue 2
Hi all,
The compiler development tutorial i wrote is not yet complete . I have developed a complier that accepts a subset of C , but it is not yet fully complete . I will send the sources when it is presentable. . The also wrote a lex like generator in the lab . Since my course is complete it sometimes might be lost in the lab , i have asked for the source , but i may not receive it . Then it might take a looog time .
My outline for next chapter
1) Regular Expressions
2) Deterministic Finite Automata
3) Non Deterministic Finite Automata
4) Converting an NFA (3) into DFA (2) - Thomsons Construction
5) DFA minimization
6) Equvalence of Regular expressions and NFA
7) Algorithm for Implemeting a lex like generator
SanLex implementation.
Yippie , I have graduated ... I am an Engineer nuw .. Bwi ha ha ha ha
Regards
Evil Sandeep

What's the ETA on the next issue? I'll probably have some time in the next week or two to write an article.
