So... Who watches anime?
So... Who watches anime?
Do you guys watch anime? How much and what kind of anime?
I watch pretty much any kind of anime and I've seen more series, movies and OVAs than I can or care to remember. The latest series I've watched were Godannar and Madlax. I'm gonna start watching a fansub of Ookami to Koushinryou tonight.
Madlax reminded me of Noir. Both series have have mysterious babes with guns and a soundtrack to go with it.
Godannar... I'm still not sure what to say about it. Its an ecchi mecha anime. Definitely more ecchi than Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. However it begins with a wedding and ends the same way it began. I guess all modern mecha series have romance in them. Even though nothing necessarily comes out of it like in that first Macross series.
The first anime series I saw was... oh gosh... how surprising... Dragonball Z... Well at least it got me interested. Therefore I watched the whole series and from there I continued with Dragonball and Dragonball GT. Of course after that came series like Neon Genesis Evangelion, etc. However that is ancient history...
I'm still waiting for the 2nd season of Gundam 00 and hoping that they make a new Full Metal Panic! series (FMP series are among my favorites).
My favorites among the currently running series are To-Love-Ru (episode 8 was funny), Kamen no Maid Guy (the maid guy is so shameless), Itazura na Kiss (I know its a series for girls but I like it anyway) and Naruto Shippuuden (I guess I need to watch all Naruto animes until the end since I already watched the first series).

I watch LOADS of anime, I've been wondering whether to post a similar thread for ages, but never got round to it...
Right now i'm watching naruto shippuuden, bleach and Ranma 1/2 (Yah, Ranma's ancient but it's really good).
Jules
edit: Oh and I voted I watch anime... everything else is irrelevant...

I don't watch anime or that stuff related. For me, it's sick, stupid, full of bloat and especially very cartoonish and lame. And, I'm sick of the big "mosquito/fly" humanoid eyes.
It's the second source of brainwashed teenagers, but that's just my opinion, I don't want to flamewar you.

Full-Metal Alchemist is AMAZING! I've watched the entire series and movie more than I can count. Inuyasha is great as well. Samurai X is good, but I don't want it thaaat much.

I've been watching anime for years as well. To be completely honest I think a few things do sorta ruin it though, dubs tend to be sub par (at least in the US) and filler arcs can kill off a very good series. I'm a bigger fan of manga generally as it doesn't really have filler and tends to have more variety when it comes to the main character.
Some of my favorites include: Berserk, Full Metal Panic!, Death Note, Yakitate Japan! and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Yeah, many of the old ones are often good. Well at least those series which were done in the 80's and after... series which are from the 70's or even older usually tend to look too old and primitive even for my taste. Urusei Yatsura (started showing in 1981 if I remember correctly) is pretty old too and I still like it... yes, some of the episodes suck but then again there are some hilariously funny ones too. I've watched Ranma 1/2 two times and still many of the episodes make me laugh out loud. I like especially the chinese babe Shampoo... I know she is a pain in the rear to Ranma but shes cute so its ok.suthers wrote:Ranma 1/2 (Yah, Ranma's ancient but it's really good).

I understand your point. My best friend feels the same way about anime as you do and I've talked about this with her many times. I myself have a problem with those people who do things just because its trendy...
I fully understand that anime can be seen as a childish thing and as escapism among other things but then again that is exactly why I like it... and I'm already closer to being 30 years old than to being a teenager. Anime helps me relax after a day at the office.

I really like full-metal Alchemist, watched an unhealthy amount of times, hehehe.01000101 wrote:Full-Metal Alchemist is AMAZING! I've watched the entire series and movie more than I can count. Inuyasha is great as well. Samurai X is good, but I don't want it thaaat much.
Yah people think it brain washes us, but hey, I love (I hide my habit at school..., hope nobody from school ever reads this forum (Very improbable, most of them have trouble turning their laptops on and can do nothing but game)).
And yah, its escapism, so what, nobody can say that they don't like escaping from the realities of life.

No, sorry, I don't watch anime any more. I used to, but then something happened: it got old.
The internet is mostly to blame for this. The internet became infested with anime. I mean, no matter where I went, there the anime was. There were people drooling over it, blabbering in Japanese they didn't know, and generally throwing hate at everything that wasn't anime. It gets quite tiring.
The real thing that ticks me off is the fact that pretty much everything has been taken over by anime. They barely make American cartoons anymore, and the ones that they do make are quite often anime rip offs. Then, half of the fan pictures you find on the internet are drawn anime style, regardless of whether or not they're from an anime. I've seen everything turned into anime fanart without much reason, from Ninja Turtles to Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid.
That ended up making me start to get irritated just seeing things like sweat drops and chibis. I can't really explain it, but it's like something has permanently changed in me. I can still watch some more serious animes, like the Gundam animes, but anything that has much at all in the way of overexaggerated anime expressions, catgirls, sweat drops, chibis, or the like just makes me irritated.
Sorry, just not for me anymore.

@Telgin:
I know what you mean. Every now and then I stop to think about the same things.
Another problem I have is choosing what to watch next. Often I simply have no interest in anything but end up watching something anyway (when I need to take a break from coding) just in case it could surprise me. I guess I'm just addicted.
I'd say that it is too popular for its own good. I understand that it was meant to be a business from the very beginning but then again there should be a limit for everything. A lot of really sucky anime gets done simply because there are people who watch it with joy just because its called anime. I do admit that I'll watch just about anything but then again that doesn't mean that I like it or that I'll watch the whole series.
There is also the sad fact that much of new anime is simply a remake or a rehash of an old series or follows some industry format down to the level of details according to it's genre. But then again the same thing can be seen in other TV shows also. The anime trend in the US will die someday... I look forward to that too.
Still waiting for the next series that is as good as Death Note... watching it was a blast.
@Cognition
Yeah, dubs (both US and Finnish) usually suck and badly. I think I once saw a dubbed episode of Full Metal Panic! somewhere and immediately decided that its better for me to watch anime raw than with a bad dub. One of the series that I can actually watch dubbed is the old version of DBZ. I saw the new re-dubbed and censored version on TV and vowed to myself that I would never watch that version again. The same thing with some DB movie... I hate it when they change they voice actor of the main character. It takes so much energy to get used to the new voice that I can't concentrate on the story.

With the time I got really selective about what I watch. There is far to much trash out there and I dont want to wast my time with it.
But you also find some nice work of art.
Death Note
Cowboy Bebop
Ghost in the Shell
Monster (I currently watching this)
Akira
Shigurui
Full Metal Alchemist + Movie
Full Metal Panic - Session 1 and 2
Gantz (Won't fit everyones taste but still interesting)
ghost hound
laputa (old style+for kids, but I like it)
Nasu - Summer in Andalusia (Movie)
Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (Movie)
Some of the Gundam Animes are also nice. But after you watched one you know the main story and don't have to watch another one.
