I usually host my own site from my at-home server.

I try not to use free hosting as it usually sucks, or make you post in their forums. And I wouldnt want to pay for one as I can just use my own server to do all the dirty work.

I would highly reccomend 110mb, as they are free, have no ads and have 5gb storage space, along with 300gb bandwidth. It's not a scam, seriously. I've been using then for about two years now and they have never let me down. PHP is free, MySQL only costs a little. Give it a try.

I have rented a vServer account some time ago, and successfully converted the stock SuSE Linux into a Gentoo box configured to my tastes. Aside from mail hosting including spam and virus filters, it gives me Subversion, Trac, and whatever else I need online.

There's nothing like a "root" account. 8)
Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.

Hi,

I use 1&1, but that's going to change soon. I recently had a payment query which was dealt with extremely slowly and with the package I'm on, you don't get MySQL or root access, meaning I couldn't install MediaWiki and can't run SVN. I would have to pay quite a bit more per year to get these features, which I have seen elsewhere even on cheaper packages.

If you were looking at using them, don't bother.

Cheers,
Adam

110mb fits me well. No MySQL or wiki without a upgrade, but pmwiki and flatpress are support with a simple click installation.
As always, it's blocked in China.

I run my own server at home, so I can have whatever I want on it and I know exactly what's happening.

Other than that, I haven't really found a decent free host.

If you just wanna play with MySQL and PHP then I would suggest looking at http://freehostia.com/free_hosting.html

The only real issue I have with the free hosting is the 500kb file size limit.

I have some web space, and I hardly use it. If anyone needs a little space like 25MB or so then I can gladly create a FTP account. You can play with PHP and I do not mind creating an SQL database.
