I've never found Fedora to be slow. I've been using Fedora since F7, never had any trouble with it, and I've always found Ubuntu to be slower.01000101 wrote:don't forget slow.
After using Fedora 9 on the same box as the ubuntu beta, I can honestly say that there is a HUGE speed increase when using ubuntu. I don't know exactly why, but boot times and general execution times dropped dramatically in ubuntu.
I don't really LOVE the F9, but the F8 was ok.
Limited linux knowledge shall be melt ice fast, and you will taste the coolness.Zacariaz wrote:Of course LFS64 is the way to go if you really wanna go somewhere, but how the heck am I suposed to do a "Linux From Scratch"? I mean, sure, I'm not stupid or anything, but my experience with linux is somewhat... Limited.
no big deal at all, really.
I really wouldn't bother with LFS unless you needed some intense kernel customization. It's much easier to use a minimalistic Disto and just add/compile what you need for it, possibly compile and patch a new kernel if you're feeling ambitious.
You really wont feel a speed difference on LFS and unless you have a personally made kernel patch to apply it's really not worth it. Plus you'll probably want a nice free time where you can leave your computer idle for a while as it compiles, after all it's gonna take a LONG time to compile.

Though it might come as a surprise, I am a perctionist and minimalist, thus LFS is very appealing to me, so if the generel oppinion is that someone with limited knowledge, like me, can actually do this, I will, however I do need a guide/tutorial/walkthrough or something, cause, as I said ealier, the LFS documentation is not "easy reading" for me.
This was supposed to be a cool signature...

A quick read of the first chapters shows that the manual is pretty much a walkthrough already. If you can't follow it, I really wonder how obvious a guide must be.Zacariaz wrote:I do need a guide/tutorial/walkthrough or something, cause, as I said ealier, the LFS documentation is not "easy reading" for me.
Gentoo is down to earth as well, but less work, and has a manual of excellent quality. I suggest you experiment with that first. If that's still too difficult, well, distros like xandros and ubuntu exist for a reason
Maybe they have improved it since last time. I would feel really bad if it is as easy as you suggest, but I still are not able to do it.Combuster wrote:A quick read of the first chapters shows that the manual is pretty much a walkthrough already. The is also the of chance that we are talking about different docs, but I doubt it.
