should we create an OS development magazine?

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

I'm not 'the' editor. I'm 'a' editor. If you're looking for 'the' editor, than Yayyak's your guy. (I think...)

The point is that i do not do failures, i hate talking shops, the mag will not be a failure if we all work together, there are some on the forum who are waiting for it to fail, thinking its like in the past, where a group talk about a project, but nothing gets done.
For the mag to work and be a success, it needs a strong leader (that is the editor).
Now we need people to put there names forward who want to be editor and we can vote.
This person needs to want to take the mag forward and motivate people to write articles, do art work etc.
If nobody knows who the editor is, ether there is no editor or he/she is not doing a good job.
So all member who want the job and want to make it a success, put your names forward, so we can vote for a editor.
If no editor comes forward, the mag was just a talking shop.

As for posting my articles, remember no one wants to read a mag, that releaser's its articles, in drips and drabs, before the release date.

I have been trying to orgonize people a bit, but I'm not an editor, therefore it is hard to get writers to submit.

I need even the slightest amount of articles so that I can start setting up the site properly. I even made an upload page to sumit articles.

Should there be a vote for a leader? I kindof doubt that anyone is going to step up and put forth their leadership (not that that would be a bad thing).

I would hate to see this fail .

What is the role of the editor of the magazine exactly?
1. The magazine name is System Call? if ever there was a printed version of the magazine I propose that each page would be numerated syscall(1), syscall(2), syscall(3), etc, or if you prefer, syscall(*).
2. What can the editor decide, or if you prefer, is everything is democratically decided, which is a bad thing, or if you prefer again, the survival of the fittest, which is not always what the editor prefers.
3. Being the editor of the magazine is not an honor, it's responsabilities, and I don't even think in the era of Internet where the paper is virtual and the only concern is the bandwidth, an editor must have the same role as in a paper magazine.
4. Who will be the editor? Yayyak?
5. In what license will the magazine will be published?

edit: if we can't find the editor in chief we can do a round robin? everyone get to edit in turn, until the one get to be chosen as fit for the purpose.

1: The magazine is indeed titled "System Call"
2: I vote (haha) in favor of a non-democratic task-force. Editor should be in the position to drop an article if deemed necessary without having to consult everyone. maybe, a democracy amongst a handful of editors, but that's it.
3: Agreed.
4: 'the' editor, I believe is Yayyak, but I haven't heard from him in some time. Alboin is another, and anyone else who wishes to take on the responsibility.
5: IMHO we should brainstorm our own.

BTW, even though I'm not a writer, I'm creating a how-to on writing the RTL8139(D) driver. Yes I am aware that I have a snag with a part of the packet-reception process, but that is hardly enough to forfeit writing the entire thing as I have most of it completed and in working order.

Yes, I am still alive.
I'm 'the' editor?

Let's get cracking then. A PM has been sent to 01000101 about the website. Another has been sent to Alboin. I really like what I've seen so far in terms of writing. I'd encourage people to send in ANYTHING. We can decide later what direction (if any) we want the magazine to go in. For now, as long as it's low level, anything will fit.

As far as license is concerned, I think we should craft one. The gist would be that authors retain rights to their work, and grant a non-exclusive right for their work to be distributed through the magazine. The artwork and the rest of the publication (format, stuff like that) itself are in the public domain.

Democratic doesn't work in a magazine of any sort. By experience. Benevolent dictator is best. Fixed terms for editor can work.

Thoughts? I have all the relevant contact bitsies down underneath the post.

Cool Yayyak is editor, now we have a editor things can get moving, i think a good editor needs to be a strong leader and take the mag in his direction.
We can all add our opinions, but in the end the editor decides, if he's not a good editor, no-one will read the mag, so we will soon know.
Next we need a email address, so we can submit articles etc.
Also we need to know what format to summits the articles in , we need as simple as possible like ASCII or html, that everyone can use.
Also a deadline for articles to be in by.
So the info that needs to be posted is

1. A email address to submits articles to ?
2. Articles format ?
3. Deadline for articles submision, for first issue ?

I meant this in a good way, as i read a lot of mags and new editors come and go, but they all put there own stile on the mag, but if no one wants that stile, the readership goes down, so just make it the type of mag you would want to read.

I have finished my article on FAT12, decided to not put any code in it, unnecessary I thought. After all it's not an article on assembly language!
Where do I post it? It's in pdf format, is it good?

I am currently getting situated on the new server, so no uploading at the moment. if you would like to get it looked over and accepted, pass it on to one of the editors.

Then once they give the thumbs up, I should be ready for uploads.

I'm a bit worried about the license. We need all authors to EXPLICITLY state in their articles that the magazine can edit and use their material at it's whim.

PD will not work due to foreign issues. (eg. Germany)

I propose 'The FreeBSD Documentation License', without the clauses, for everything. (This would then be required at the top of *every* submitted article *by* the author.)

This license would also be needed somewhere on the submit form, something like Wikipedia's.
