I hear them knocking on my door allready. They are here to get me and lock me up in a rubber cell without windows.

Yes it's true, i'm considering buying a mac.

There was a time when my view of a real computer was a mess of electronics and wires lying on my desk. Sure, it only worked when the moon, planets and stars were in the right position, but there could be no doubt, it was a computer and it looked cool.

I got older and now i suddenly want something stylish and beautifull and though i've allways made fun of people with mac's, i might be in the same position as them not too long from now.

Currently im considering the macbook air, its such a work of art yet still powerfull.

Welcome to the cult, brother!

I wouldn't recommend a MacBook Air as your primary machine. Without an optical drive & Ethernet port, you'd probably find it too limited. It might make a good secondary machine though, if you really need the mobility. Otherwise, I'd recommend a MacBook Pro if you really want a laptop.

@Solar: Alas, too true... The Mac lost a certain amount of its mystique when it switched from PPC and the Forth-based OpenFirmware to Intel and EFI. On the other hand, it means I can dual-boot Windows XP and play Oblivion.

Mac's are pretty.... but that's about it.

I use OSX (leopard) on one of my PC's, its fun to use every now-and-then.

but that's just me.

If I had the money, I would buy one (macbook pro). Many people at my office use them, and imho they are "UNIX... That works".

I tried OS X on my PC the other day, it's nice, looks great, but there are some annoyances (at least, IMHO). Probably mainly because I'm used to things in Linux/Windows, but oh well. My main gripe is that there is no maximize ability - the "+" button on a window hardly ever actually maximizes, and instead resizes the window to fit it's content. But some people might prefer that, I'm one of those people that just maximizes everything.

The only real annoyance I have found is the stupid programs bar at the bottom. I hide it to keep it out of my way, but as soon as my mouse accidentally even looks at the bottom of the screen, out pops the stupid bar. And of course it is on TOP of all the other windows, so if you are on a webpage and you try to click on something at the bottom, you need to scroll up a bit haha.

It's funny how the roles are reversed. Now it's Windows that's a sinking ship, instead of the MacOS of the latter 90's. And it's more more to use MacOS X than Windows Vista. I remember in 1996 when It when it was better to use WIndows 95 with its true preemptive multitasking than System 7.5.3 release 2, because 7.5.2 and was buggy and the original 7.5.3 was too much buggy to be called software.

LOL. I mean just LOL. You know, by statistics Mac OS is being used only by 3.26% of all those who use an Operating System on their laptops, desktops and such. Vista is 11.96% and Windows XP is 75.07%. I don't see anything here which is being "reversed". Mac OS will never even get anywhere close to where Microsoft Operating Systems are. It's just the truth. Deal with it.

It's your prediction, not the truth. The truth is, nobody knows the truth yet. All I know is, Apple makes products that a lot of people choose to buy, and are making money hand over fist doing it. Microsoft could benefit from some healthy competition.

Pepople in the know will buy a mac (given they have the money and the will) because you can run windows oon a mac but you cant always run Macos X on a pc, and its not even legal etc. (i dont know what im talking about im presuming you cant always run osx on a pc). THe main problem I see with the mac is the illusion of progress apple (and steve job and its aura) is feeding the fashion victims by releasing sub-highend product. ps: the imac isnt quadcore, the lowend macbook isnt superdrive, etc. And you pay pricier price than buying pc stock. With a pc, if a new processor is released, you can buy it, put it in your computer, etc. With a mac,
Apple lost its soul when steve jobs got its job back from Apple.

What? you mean the millions of people who (a) bought a PC from Dell or Gateway which have everything bundled with them anyway, so the user has no choice and (b) don't know any better.

Windows is and always has been a marketing game. Same with DOS. Inferior product, superior marketing, forcing bundles left right and centre. Granted, windows XP is a very good OS (reserving judgements on vista at the moment). but from a design, security, technological and bugcount point of view is in no way the best player.

I would venture to say that most artists (graphical) use macs. I would also venture to say that a large percentage of coders use macs. They're very reliable, stable, and good at what they do. They're also expensive and subject somewhat to vendor lock in, which is why I don't own one (the first reason).

Please know what you're talking about before you flame, 0110110110111011.

Please take a look at some of vista's touted "revolutionary features" and then repeat that lie statement. All marketing is salespeople saying pretty much as much as they can get away with without being sued.

I mean who would in their right minds use a Mac to write programs while they can't even say if their programs are going to be able to be run on the same OS after 2-3 years? I mean have you ever compared the number of software written for PC with a Windows OS and a Mac? There really is no competition. Windows of course wins by a far margin, period. That's why Mac OS doesn't have as many user software written for it as Windows. Same story with Linux of course. I would also blame the API of these Operating Systems as one of the reasons they repel programmers.

About people not having a choice for buying a laptop with another operating system installed on them: that's not really true. When I was buying a Dell Latitude D620, I did have a choice to buy it with Linux preinstalled on it. Why did I choose Windows instead? Well of course because I knew how much I could gain out of it. Because I program for living. I don't go around in open source communities brag about how much I know and spend my time and life on writing software for dumb people to use for free. If you want my software, you've got to pay for it because that's how people live their lives unless they are over 20 and still living with their parents and using their parents' money.

Why I wouldn't use Linux? Because I don't have time to use the command prompt whenever something goes wrong (which happens A LOT). I would rather use the smooth GUI in Windows rather than using the retarded slow GUI on Linux.
