0xAA55 is a boot sector ID and a ROM signature. ;)
How do you say "l337", or "n00b", or "pwn" anyway?
l337 - el-dhree-dhree-sedthem
n00b - en-noolah-noolah-b, or nohgp. :)
pwn - peheh-wheh-ehen
lol - lhohlh
powned - something like pohwhnedt
0xAA55 - noolahiks-aah-aah-pehtg-pehtg

If you can't speak it, use WinXP control panel, the module named "Speech". ;)

You know that modern BIOSes (on a real PC) do not care about the signature? When I had my first "OS", they were just raw binaries copied to sectors of a floppy disk (including the boot sector) and it works almost everywhere (except bochs i think). Even on a old 80486.

I am not a German, but yes I have absolutely different pronouncation than you. ;)

True, but still! It's mentioned in each and every one of the classical works. Can someone make an OS reading nothing but online tutorials? What do you think?

*cough* MMURTL Image *cough*

I knew that 0xAA55 means the boot sector ID before your posts, but it has some extra meanings too as we can see.
BTW what about the magazine name 0xDEADBEEF?

so that's what, +3 to SC?
and MMURLT is the OS for "Developing Your Own 32-BIT Operating System" by Richard A. Burgess, im looking at the book right now.

I wouldn't vote for 0xAA55 becuase of the inability to pronounce it, and even if someone decided on a diction for it, we would probably have to have another vote as we are not a very... agreeing group when it comes to these things lol.

Looks like SC might win it. but we'll see when the poll runs out.

Hey! Looks like System Call got the win.

Wow, it's like a primary!
I voted for Ground One
I'm not the only one!

I like System Call too though.

I voted for OSDev, 0xAAFF just doesn't role of the tongue and System Call again doesn't truly explain what the mag is about.

A lot of people vote 0xAA55,
but who will search (in a search engine) this ?????
I don't know if the 1% of programmers know what maybe is these two bytes.
I hope "System call" wins, even i don't vote it :)
Keep coding...

RUMyMummy wrote:* I'm sure certain acquaintances of yours say things like "lol" and "powned" out loud to show off their elite geekiness. Well, contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as too much rat poison when used as an act of mercy. Trust me.
If I were say them allowed I'd say Elite (1337), Lawl (LOL), Roffle (ROFL), Lah-mayo (LMAO), Owned (Pwned).

Saying "Powened" sounds like they're wanna-be cool-geeks who don't know the definition behind the word. Have you ever seen the video series Pure Pwnage? It's pronounced "Pure Ownage".
My OS is Perception.
