honestly, I didn't think System Call would get many votes, but it sure has made a comeback from 0xAA55's earlier domination.

still another day to go, so maybe the tides will turn again.

If we called it "The Underground Hacker's Magazine" people might get the wrong idea (think: Pentagon and criminal records of all of us).

In the 'free' world today, they'll hunt you down, call you a terrorist, and then torture you. Oh, and that's before any trial. ;)

They'll trace your IP. It's a piece of cake if they can monitor the domain servers. And they do.

I voted for 0xAA55 because it can't be pronounced. It's kind of catchy and has a good chance of becoming a net meme.

OK, enough goofing off for me. >>.>>

We need to come up with an official pronunciation. Some possibilities are;
- Oh Ecks Aye Aye Five Five
- Aye Aye Five Five
- Hexi-double-aye-double-five
- Double-aye-five hache (= AA55h - my favourite)
- Forty-three six oh-five (0xAA55 = 43,605 in base 10)
- One two five, one two five (0xAA55 = 125,125 in base 8)
- That Magazine

self explaining name?

Post by Osbios »

I didn't participate on the Magazine conversation so far. But I have to say I was always a friend of self explaining names.

The name "Low-Level Programming Magazine" would just do it. By the way: it really looks funny how much "work" you all put into the name. Think more about what you can put IN the magazine! And after the first edition you can still rename it. ;)

"System Call" sounds pretty cool but wouldn't it mix with lower case? For example "you need to read system call" - as it can be confused with the magazine, or the real system call output or such.

As for 0xAA55, it looks like BIOS ROM signature, but... can fit. :)

I voted for Ground One 8)

inflater: You don't know what 0xAA55 is? :?

Nobody's quite sure how "Linux" is pronounced either. The official pronunciation is Lee-nahks, but lots of people say Lai-nooks anyway. None of the best memes are directly pronounced as such. How do you say "l337", or "n00b", or "pwn" anyway? *

Plus, take a look at the English rendering of 0xAA55: Ox aass. :D Isn't that precious? What could be more appropriate for free low level hobby rags, eh?

On reflection, I think I've just doomed my cause to certain failure... :P OK, OK, How about 7C00 then? "Tcoo" doesn't mean a thing! Honest! Heeey!!

* I'm sure certain acquaintances of yours say things like "lol" and "powned" out loud to show off their elite geekiness. Well, contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as too much rat poison when used as an act of mercy. Trust me.
