should we create an OS development magazine?

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

I thought one of the major points being made by this magazine is to get higher-level programmers to shift to lower level programming? so why rule out anyone who has no idea what the magic bootsector word is?

I like The Underground Hacker's Magazine, but I dispise abbreviations unless they themselves form a word.

0xAA55 is a good name. The original name for drdobbs was Dr. Dobb's Journal of Tiny BASIC Calisthenics & Orthodontia , which attracted subscriptions from dentists. high level language programmers are not stupid, they will understand it's about low level programming and the word aa55 has a meaning.

I vote for 0xAA55!

Doesn't that sort of tie the magazine into the x86 architecture "jerry"?

I expect a few people might be interested in reading articles about... ARM.. or PowerPC for instance.

0xaa55 of course doesn't limit the magazine to the x86 architecture, but x86 is a popular architecture.

I was allso thinking about a combination of c and assembly "CASM" but still i don't think it's suitable, that allso goes for AA55 allthoug it was my idea.

lol I think it's poll time.
I'll post another thread here in a bit with ALL the names I find throughout this topic and then people can be free to vote for a few days..

we really need to move past the 'naming' stage.

Like moving into the what-are-we-putting-in-the-first-issue-of-the-mag stage?

Okay, the first step would be to figure out what's already being written.

...

WRITERS!
Post now if you are already writing something, or have anything in mind for the first issue.

That's a great idea.
that could show the others that there are alot of people creating OSes that have some quite surprising functionality to them.

I said I would write, but I would like something to write about. Any ideas? I'll do research, etc, I just need a good idea. I'm open for your suggestions, so just post a few topics.

Yeah, so thus far:

March Issue:
  • Intro
  • p. 1 - Editor's Intro (Overview of mag, overview of highpoints in issue.)
  • p. 1 - Mag contributer listing
  • p. 2 - Table of contents

    Columns generally in every issue
  • Dex's Low Level Busting (Must be careful of name.)
  • Featured OS

    Articles (Main filler of mag.)
  • jerryleecooper's Article on Paging

Newcomer Material (Should be at end, to avoid annoying non newcomers.)
  • Tutorial of some sort. (Maybe something on C? Or pointers? How 'newcomerish' are we talking?)
  • How the compile and link process really works.
  • Low level propaganda
We need ideas for articles and general columns. A few more newcomer articles could also be added. I'm willing to work on the newcomer stuff if anyone has any ideas for that.

I propose we work towards releasing the first issue on March 31st.

As for ideas,
  • A series on quantum computing and the future of the osdever.
  • A comparison of shell interfaces, focusing on largely unknown shells, and even commercial ones. (eg. powershell.)
  • Theory of GUI design.
  • OS protection schemes, and their actual merit. (eg. machine code verification, managed code.)
  • Safe System Programming Languages

The cover doesn't have a number.
