should we create an OS development magazine?

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

I already have Scribus on my machine at the moment, as I was testing it out. It's not as full-featured as InDesign (which is what I'm used to), but it should do the job for a while. I can't afford InDesign at the moment either.

If I were to do page layout, I'd like the format (coming to me) to be HTML with pictures in a folder. Zipped in .zip or .tgz, not .rar, like was said above.

I'll start making it with HTML & PHP and I'll throw in some dummy code for basic connectivity (for now) to a MySQL database.
I have alot of that code in some other pervious projects that I'll just port over.

I like simplicity as well.

If some of the graphics people would like to start coming up with logo prototypes that would be great, or any graphics (buttons, etc) in general, that would be helpful as well.

we need a solid name.

I'm not using frames and I am using the strict definitions (html) as well.

Finally as i understand it will not be a magazine.
It will be a large library (articles, tutorials, source code, etc) for low-level programming.
Thats nice.
But we have to put some rules for how to write them, because the team that will check the articles before uploading to internet, will have too much work to do.

* Keep in mind that some source codes tutorials/examples it useful to be converted from C to asm and opposite.

* I think that is also useful to be a channel at IRC (i don't know if already exists) so we can communicate faster.
The OSDev forum can be a tool for this library/magazine (whatever it will be).
But (in my opinion) its better to be read-only, just a database without discussion (for start). Sometimes is boring to read 10 threads with a lot of off topic posts to find out how you can do something.
If it has only articles, tutorials and source its more easier to someone to get the needed info.

* Some of us can be translators for some articles at our mother language.

* There will be a good place (download area) for our hobby OS, for testing, etc.

(Forgive me but i read only the 4 first pages of topic)

How so? It will offer articles, tutorials, opinion pieces, etc. just like a magazine.

...

For the other name, I propose we use "The Underground", or that we have no name at all. Before we have a logo, we'll probably need this decided upon.

A more important matter is the layout for this issue. What articles are we looking for, and on what subjects? We probably should lay it out to make the writer's jobs easier.

I am willing to write articles, i have a idea where i will put myths to the test about low level programming, like mythbusters, but for programmers.

But i think we need to decide on a main editor for the project, just for the first issue, then if it works out he/she can stay or we can pick another one.

Now i think, Yayyak has already put his name forward, so if anyone else wants the post, put your name forward. If there's only one name, then we have our main editor.
If there's more than one, then they can post how they will take the mag forward.
And then we can each vote on the one we like best.

I have begun (began?) an article about pagin, but have found on the internet some fine articles about paging, but mine is good too.

If the editors agrees, I can also write a column, or a chronicle, about current events of os dev/ technologies, etc. humorous one, if you see what im talking about.

For its good to be more than one articles for the same theme, because every writer has a different way to present something, and every reader understands in different way some things.
In most cases, two (or more) opinions/articles/tutorial/etc are better that one.

You could put some 64 bit paging info in there too as not all OSs here are x86.

I was thinking about an introductory article about paging on ia32, but paging in general is a vast subject and discovering paging on platforms such as 68000 or ppc is an interest for me because its theses partforms on which i discovered computerdom. As a final paragraph I will put info on am64t or what it's called as an interoduction for another article.
Keep up the good work. :D

YAY my name 'the underground' seems to be liked! =)

I've started working on the site, i'll post a teaser in a few days.

I'm not gfx person, but I got bored and made a pseudo-logo for the time being.

the name is unimportant, its the style, i kind of like it. but who knows, im not an art person.

I agree with whoever stated that tutorials and such should be written in both C and ASM as they are (for the most part) the most widely used languages for OSDevving. I'm not flaming other languages btw.

Regarding the banner, you should have kept 'MAGASINE'. :P
