Funny, because the common pronunciation is "in-flay-ter".. which is a weird nickname.

im on a 8mbit/8mbit connection which would be nice if it wasn't share between 250-300 people. We get a new 50mbit/50mbit around May 1. but im not sure it's going to help.
MessiahAndrw started as "Messiah" after playing at a LAN under an old name (I forget that now) and completely sucking due to a screwy mouse that kept cutting out every 5 seconds. So rather than people think I'm still sucky, I changed my name to "The Messiah" (I made it up on the spot as a homage to the game Messiah). Then some people got to know me by that name and Messiah stuck. Then I tried joining either an online RPG or a website (I forget) and Messiah was taken so I tried MessiahAndrew but there was a 12 character limit, so I debated between MesiahAndrew and MessiahAndrw and preferred the later.
Then I must have visited that website or played that RPG a lot that MessiahAndrw stuck.
I've been using my nickname for several (around 6 or so) years now almost everywhere on the net as well as LAN gaming. It started off as 'kayser', I was just searching for something that had nothing to do with my real name and picked it up for whatever reason. 'Joe' is a nick for my (real) first name, after some time the 's' in kayser went into a 'z', and finally the 'er' was substituted with the capital 'A' (call it a sub-conscious need for 1337-ness, I don't know). I found this nick to be pretty unique across the net so I simply stick with it for now.
Back in the times of arcade gaming, high score lists were three letters only. In my home town, the older boys mainly used country acronyms ("BRD" for Germany, "USA", "USR" for USSR, "FRA", "BEL" etc.). All the good ones were taken.
Being into reading SciFi, I knew the scientific names for earth ("terra") and the sun ("sol"). Terra didn't fit, so I stuck with "SOL". I was quite good despite being much younger than the others (11 or so at that time), so "SOL" featured often on those high score lists (and got me some - albeit small - "fame").
Later, high score lists allowed more letters. My TLA (three letter acronym) suddenly looked rather pathetic, so I extended it to "Solar". When the internet hit, I saw no reason to change that nick.
Where "Solar" is already taken (on SourceForge, gentoo.org and irc.freenet.org, for example) I use "DevSolar".
Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.
My nick name in primary and high school was Harry Potter. It was the time of the third book coming out in Australia, and I (entirely unintentionally) had a scar on my forehead on school photo day. 6 years later, I managed to shake it off.
My avatar 'Yayyak' came from a ceramics class in high school where I was making a sort of yak-ish animal, and somebody commented that it looked unusually happy (I had given it a smile and eye brows... it looked rather odd). Later the same day I was invited into GMail. I wanted something original... so Yayyak stuck.
I've regretted choosing that ever since... I was invited early enough in GMail's history that I could have had jack.scott or something along those lines... but no. I was a teenager, wasn't I? *sigh* As forum software has become more advanced, I've slowly changed my name to my real name on most forums and things. Now, Yayyak only remains here and on freenode.
My alias that I chose when 12 years old and extremely juvenile was "mankeyrabbit". Don't ask me why, I still don't know, but I still use it for all online gaming, along with variants such as "Mankey". It is, in fact, my main gmail account name, although I have several less juvenile addresses forwarding to it.
Ideally I'd just use "Alex" everywhere, but obviously that's most likely taken when I register somewhere. IIRC, the "Extreme" part came from when I was trying to think of something to tag on to Alex when I was registering somewhere, and I saw a T-shirt hanging in my cupboard that said "Extreme" on it. I use this nick now wherever Alex is taken, but I try to use Alex where possible :p
The name I use on the internet really has nothing to do with my own name or any nickname I have in person.
It's just a random name my brother cooked up for me back when I played Everquest. I just ended up keeping it and using of other things (perhaps too much, I've ended up using the name Telgin for just about every fictional character I've had to devise / portray for any situation, be it computer game or what have you).
Judging from "brynet inc"... hehe, how much your 9600 bps dial-up connection works?
