Filter software

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

Filter software

Post by Zacariaz »

A friend of mine have asked me to figure out what software (prefeably freeware) is avalible when you want to block fx. porn, race discrimination, violence, etc. from your children.

This an area of which i have no experience and though i have searched google, i have no idea where to start.

So i'd be glad to here any recomendations you might have.

Best way: Set up a server with Squid on it filtering all through traffic.

2nd best way: Use Firefox and see this page.

Simple: Deny them access to a computer.

Still paranoid? prevent them from watching television.. socializing with friends or reading any tabloid style magazines.

My point? censorship always fails....

Race discrimination? Why not block Political opinion and Capitalism too...

As for the only way to block all those things, prevent access to the system.

My advise to the parent... be better parents, don't really on something else to bring them up and hide them from thing's because some over zealous, but completely ignorant liberal has given them the impression that the Internet is all bad and that there children are all too stupid to know right from wrong.

You're absolutely right, no amount of "filtering" software will replace proper parenting.

I new this would evolve like this, and i do agree that you shouldnt be so paronoid about what your children are watching, but never the less i was asked to investigate this, and that exactly what im going to do.

On another note there is allso aother problems with browsing, fx. port sites. They tend to change your start page, snap ypur email and so on. I know how to avoid these problems, but most children don't, and even if they did, they probably wouldnt care.
