Leopard Dock issue...

Leopard Dock issue...

i just got a Macbook Pro and am having trouble removing icons from the dock. i drag it out to the desktop, but there isn't any 'poof' or anything, it just drags itself back down there. i can remove all the icons that were there when i first installed Leopard, but all the icons that i put there, i cant remove. can anyone help me on this?

Just off the top of my head I'd guess it's a problem with file permissions. Did your Mac come with Leopard pre-installed, or did you upgrade it from Tiger? I upgraded and had a problem with the groups not transferring over properly. If you're *nix-savvy enough, I'd suggest opening up Terminal and checking the permissions in /Users/<yourusername>/Library/Preferences using ls -l and fix them using chown if they're not owned by <yourusername>:staff. If you upgraded from Leopard, you might have to create the staff group first. I think its gid is supposed to be 20.

Before going ahead and doing any of this, I would suggest first reading this thread.
