Linux on USB

Post by Zacariaz »

Yesterday i had a talk with a budy of mine. He wanted to get in to linux, learn how to use it and so on. The problem is that he only has a laptop and no free space on his harddrive so i suggested installing a linux dist on his 8gb usb key. We tryed installing both debian and ubuntu, but at some point it failed. Now i can se severel reason why it failed but im starting to wonder if theres something im missing. Maybe you cant just install linux on an external device or...???

I failed during installation of the basic system. Its more like the cd-rom drive failed to restart after having been poweren down for a periode of time.

I know theres severel linux distributions designed for usb devices, but really, im a debian guy ;)

I installed Damn Small Linux to my 1/2 full 512MB USB drive. It looks a bit cheap though, but it can be useful when your system will crash. :)
