That time of year again...

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

That time of year again...

Post by AndrewAPrice »

It's getting close to that time of year again..! You know what I mean: (top three only apply to southern hemisphere students :D)
- end of year exams
- assignments pile up
- 2-3 month break......
- ......and Christmas! :D:D:D:D

Let's see what I have in terms of assignments and exams:

Level Design:
Finish my level design document (I promised myself I wouldn't go to bed until it's done) - all I have to do now is to write about the emotional elements of each section.
Finish implementing my level in UnrealEd (for UT2k4).
Due next Monday.

Storyboarding:
Convert my storyboard into an animatic (I modelled my entire storyboard in 3DS Max since it would be simpler to do the fancy 3d camera rotations - now I have to render stills of the scenes and rotations), put them togeather with Adobe Premier and record my character voices, and put the sound effects together and sync the background music.
Due next Thursday.

3D Mathematics:
Implement standard and loose octrees into my 3D game framework. Then create a basic scene.
Due next Thursday.

Study for my 3D mathematics exam (3d vectors, matrix translations, physics, etc). Exam on Thursday the week after next.

Programming:
Implement DirectSound into my 3D game framework along with a few other things. (I've done most of the other stuff already like loading meshes.) Then create a basic scene for this too.
Due Wednesday the week after next.

So sadly, I won't get to work on my OS for nearly 2 1/2 weeks. Since I'll basically have a week with just my programming assignment and studying for my exam, I'll probably have some spare time to squash it in.

College life is fun :D

I'll be flying south home to Adelaide (in about 4 weeks), so I'll skip all that northern Australian heat and humidity by the time summer hits! :P

I still find it weird that you are celebrating the start of summer whereas yesterday we celebrated the first sleet/snow of winter...

Have you every tried celebrating Christmas in summer? That's why a few people celebrate Christmas in July when it's winter here (except you don't give out presents like the December Christmas).

I love my cold turkey at Christmas!

I've only got one exam to go (Philosophy), and then my schooling is finished forever (until I go off to university next year).

I reckon we should have a OSDev convention. Go to a pub somewhere (Daly Waters?) or something. That'd be a good way to celebrate summer.

Wow. It would cost me about 5000USD to fly to Australia, and would take two days.....Can that be right?

Qantas says $2500AU return Vienna<->Melbourne. I picked Vienna because that's where wikipedia said Noricum was near (Austria).

Whether you would pay $2500 to fly to Australia for a beer is up to you. :P

I kind of meant it as a joke...

I think I'd fly to Germany or Austria for a beer if I were to fly for one at all. (I hear those beer gardens are impressive...)

I know, I was just kind of amazed an airplane flight would be in the thousands.

Have you heard about those airlines offering 5 cent and $10 flights (including tax) in Australia?

About my level design project, UnrealEd (the one that comes prepackaged with UT 2004) is one the best level/game editors I've used. It comes with integrated editors for animation, events, scripts, and lots more. And it's really easy to place custom weapons, vehicles, and power-ups. And the sky system is really flexible and powerful!

While we're busy not being serious about this, may I suggest that we hold a convention on each continent, wrapped together with a whole heap of Video conferencing? :P

Some conference, only ~5 members on this forum are Australian. Out of that:
- 1 won't be able to get out of work that day,
- 1 will have left their plane ticket until the last minute, but then were forced to pay overdue rent.
- 2 won't be able to get out of school.

Leaving 1 left to cover the cost of the hall hire, sitting in a big empty room all on their lonesome.

To fill out the crowed we could get some trophies made, contact Torvalds and Tanenbaum and notify them that they're OSDev nominees, tell Stallman there's free source code involved, and then contact local Unix user groups in each capital city and they'll attend expecting guest stars that probably won't show, leaving one of us with room full of angry Unix hackers all wanting refunds for their plane and hotel fairs, and a box full of unsold OSDev t-shirts.
on each continent
Antarctica included?
