what software brands, like compiler, linker, operating system environment, did microsoft use to write windows?

Depends which version. As far as I know, they have used their own. For instance, Windows 2000 was written using Visual C++ 5.

Interesting! Well, I do my NES and GBA, and even DOS development on Windows, so... :D The day I got my first Windows IDE for writing DOS code, I never looked back. Maybe they felt the same way about a UNIX XWindows IDE vs. a Windows 3.1 one ? heh.

I feel sorry for the folks who used to have to develop OSes on crappy non-IDEs back in the late 70s/early 80s. I can only imagine what it was like for those people at Xerox PARC developing their GUI back in the 70s. That must have been T-E-D-I-O-U-S!
