Re:alt.os.development
There are a lot of free NNTP servers around. I use news.cis.dfn.de which, although it requires registration, carries a lot of groups and is virtually spam-free.
Re:alt.os.development
Check if your ISP provides an NNTP server. Most do, but few actually advertise doing so. Since they are usually reserved for customers, they're pretty good. (Mine is. )
Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.

Doesn't your university have a news server?
Maybe news.ulg.ac.be ?

Re:alt.os.development
well seen, chris. They actually have news.ulg.ac.be, but they do not have 'alt.os.dev' on it ... (maybe i'll try to see if there's a procedure to reclaim other newsgroup, but i fear they wont do it)
thanks for the hints.
