just wanted to know where i can check for OS names is there a database that i can query.

Use Google. Or go to one of the many OS development web sites and look at the list of names in the links section.

because hobbies project pop up like mushrooms, and because there'll always be some developers X that ignores database Y, no exhaustive list is likely to exists.

I decided to postpone naming my OS to the day when there is something to stick a name to, and instead named my project (for ease of refering to it).

The better your OS name today, the better your chances that some other porject - or worse, company - has registered that name by the time you are ready for release.

How about "NOP" (Neo's OS Project) for the meantime, and deciding a witty OS name later?

4. Naming an OS is tellement unimportant. The world will continue spinning without a christened os. In short: don't stress you with searching a name.

or could you possibly being wondering about the name because you want to register a domain-name ?

You may want to review RFC 2100, which discusses a similar, but more complex, problem. Or consult your pineal gland.

Thanks for the info I just wanted to know if i decide to name my OS with some name and later find that this has already been taken then will it be wrong to continue using the same name.(I plan to keep it an open source project).

http://www.operating-system.org/betrieb ... -liste.htm lists 408 systems in all. That's existing ones, not including the s***load of projects in various degrees of abandon.

Nice list Sol! And I'll have to agree that for projects it's best to have a codename and waiting with the real name until you have a finished product. Open source or proprietary, commercial or charity, it's always a good idea to think of yourself as corporation trying to get by on a market.

At least it makes it a lot easier to a) release quality software and b) you're inclined not just to make Yet Another POSIC-compliant Linux-wannabe OS.

yeah point taken in fact i do not want to make another lousy OS such as Linux,Windows et al. and btw i have decided on a project code name for now with a real name for the OS sometime later.
