It has been observed many times that two "secondary" hobbies are very common among programmers: martial arts and roleplaying (in the AD&D, paper and pencil meaning).

I'd like to see the numbers for this board.

Everytime, when I have a hankering for relaxing (and that's quite often) I go into the kitchen and make some fine meal for us two.

Other ones: I do painting and writing stories, 'thou' the later one doesn't go well at the moment. funnier and more real things draw my brains attention upon them. Soldering and playing with flash chips and sorts of electronics are also a kind of distraction from the all days stress of gaining a living.

Not to forget social interaction. I don't like masses of people, but I enjoy having a good talk.

Ah well. They start with the quiet meditation movements of Tai Chi (although some debate this), and include things like Judo and Kyudo (archery), none of which are really about "hard" contact. Much less prone to injury than e.g. soccer. ;D

My all-time favourite was and is Ju-Jutsu, and while that's usually respected as one of the most efficient styles for self defense (I won't fall into the "most efficient" debate here), it's still nowhere near what the Dog Brothers call martial "art"...

Just like coding, whether you're into Basic, Delphi, C++, Lisp or Assembly, there's stuff for everyone.

However, I'm very surprised at the outcome so far...

Beyond this, reading (esp. enjoying Dan Simmons and -of course- JRR. Tolkien) and drawing are my two main hobbies ... Not forgetting c00king aswell (mixing spices and tastes altogether produce the same kind of "i'm freely creating" as c0ding do, for me

Then comes my 'less frequent hobbies': technically assisting small theatra plays (once again, the 'freely creating' feeling of enlighting the show) and driving horse&"carriage" around hills and valley playing the show from village to village, telling legends at nightfall by the fireplace, etc.

... hmm ... not really the mainstream 'UberGeek' hobbies, i fear (except for Tolkien, maybe).

Tolkien is worth some hours beside the hearth when it's cold and dark outside and the storm howls like a dozen wolves. Albeit, singing some shanties whilst walking in panties throu the flat isn't bad a choice too.

While I haven't actively practiced in a few years, I have studied both Tang Soo Do and Tai Chi Ch'uan in the past. I really ought to get back into it, but I'm far too lazy for my own good...

I'm an active roleplayer, and play in both tabletop and live action games.

I have a few hobbies.. I'm a musician, play electric (rock/metal) guitar and also sing. I build audio electronics, like effects for my guitar. I like to program systems software (and still I don't know why )
I used to be interested in amateur radio but after working for a guy who put up antenna towers that was a jackass I have lost most interest with that.
I also like cooking
I like to watch TV movies and eat popcorn, isn't that common? lol.

Heh, you lot scared me a bit at first, with the first couple of votes coming in as "neither". Now it looks more like what I expected.

Well, for me it's Ju-Jutsu, roleplaying (too many flavors to mention here), medieval re-enactment, reading (again, too many flavors to mention, but certainly including Tolkien and Lackey), and traditional archery (i.e., no visors, counterweights, or other nifty stuff - just a stick of yew, a string, and a couple of arrows).

my other main hobby is running. I do long distance running.... usually 5Km's at this point.

I'm just kidding I too enjoy playing original WarHammer and archery. I also enjoy watchng movies, biking, and playing card games.

Trancendental numbers? At least not accurately. For example, you can't express pi digitally (i.e. using numerical digits); it just goes on and on.

Technically, any continuous data can only be approximated by a discrete media. For example, while digital audio recording can reproduce sound with much greater precision than any analog reproduction, analog will always have a theoretical advantage in that it can (in principle) duplicate the entire waveform, while digital sound has to use high-speed waveform sampling, and inevitably clips frequencies greater than twice the sampling rate (IIRC).

Maybe you can't store the actual value of PI, but you can certainly store the equation by which PI is found. Since the equation describes PI exactly, and you can store the equation exactly, you can provide an exact substitute for PI. So you can in fact store an exact representation of the value of PI. Which is all sophistry anyhow , since we all know there will be rounding errors no matter which way you swing it.
