pit: channel 1 really free?

First a warning: I use channel 1 of the 8254 for the scheduler. The PC
standard reserves channel 1 of the 8254 for a refresh signal. This program
will kill that refresh signal. I haven't seen any current PC motherboards
that actually use channel 1 for refresh.

is this really true and safe to use? since when the channel 1 is out of use? what has superceeded it?
