Does anyone know what the sound ports are? I wish to design a simple OS that will do nothing but route sound from the microphone/input port to the output port. How might I go about doing this?

There are no generic sound ports... it depends on the sound hardware (aka, sound card) installed on your PC.

What card are you intending on using?

"Integrated 7.1 channel audio" is all the detail I got. I have a Dell Dimension E510.

You'll probably find that you have proprietary hardware, which Dell will only have drivers for Windows released. You can ask Dell for info on the sound chip, or maybe hack the windows drivers.

actually, its prob based on the Intel implementation of AC'97, which information is freely availible on the intel website

15 years ago, from other manufactorers i would agree, but special ordering specially designed parts is much more expensive than buying standard, off-the-shelf parts, and with the profit margins on computers being lower than any other retail industry, they cant afford such luxuries

I thought AC'97 only supported stereo sound though :S

Oh well I guess a pair of them could do surround sound

most integrated audio until recently was AC'97 that is why i said that, im not really very familier with it

after Da_Maestro's reply, i did some research, and discovered:

your audio is using the Sigmatel STAC9220 codec

this is a popular codec recommended by intel for use with Intel's HD audio controller (built into the ICH7 south bridge)

this same codec chip is used on Intel boards (and could even be the same boards, neither intel nor dell make there own boards)

information on the Intel chipset is readily availible on developer.intel.com

information on the codec chip should be availible (a quick google found some PDFs but i dont have reader on this computer) but i will leave that to you (try checking the sigmatel website)
