Zircon is the kernel in the Fuchsia OS created by Google. It is no secret that Google wants to replace current Android system with this newer system. However, Android apps will of course be supported in Fuchsia as well. This would mean that HW suppliers (like Qualcomm) who usually ship their solutions with Linux already ported, would port the Zircon kernel as well. Also the license is much more liberal that Linux which requires that companies publish their code and ship CDs with their products and so on. The licensing issue is one of the biggest reason I think that Zircon might take over Linux.
What do you think, will Zircon take over Linux?
Will Zircon take over Linux?
Re: Will Zircon take over Linux?
I don't think so.
Nobody can wipe away the license of the existing (big) code of Linux.
EDIT: I think I misunderstood you by taking "take over" literal. You probably mean "outplay".
I don't think so, too. But it could happen on mobile devices.
But there already is a growing free hardware and software community and business which gets used more and more every day.
Greetings
Peter

Funny! I didn't know that law. But I think it is only targeted at newspapers. At least I guess so, because newspapers never add a question mark if they are sure about the topic. Hence that law.AndrewAPrice wrote:Betteridge's law of headlines
Anyway, there is a threat to open source/free software. But some threat has always been there, and still open source software exists
Happy hacking

What threat is that? Various free software available has exploded the last decade so is free software really under threat? What most companies that develop various embedded systems battle is the free software licensing jungle. Especially GPL software makes it more difficult for those companies.PeterX wrote: Anyway, there is a threat to open source/free software. Re: Will Zircon take over Linux?
If they come up with a proprietary kernel and push that on a large number of devices, that might be a threat.

The Zircon kernel is MIT licensed.PeterX wrote:If they come up with a proprietary kernel and push that on a large number of devices, that might be a threat.
