About bios histroy

hello guys, i always want to know the histroy about bios, but it seems nothing about it on the internet, should guys who have some information
about it could write here.
the most important thing i want to know is when people design first OS, is there some BIOS function could be use. if it is, is it fully functioned BIOS? or guys who write the os should also do most IO port opration to control the hard ware.
the second thing is why the BIOS writer do not write OS, i think if they do it , they can do better than other OS company, such as microsoft.
