Some days ago I found something that many of you may find interesting, if not useful: details about the guts and glory of our undocumented NVIDIA cards.
Just updated the wiki with a link. It's a great read, even for people like me, that do not plan to write our own hobby driver out of it.

I guess that the nouveau driver is another good reference.
